Re: Sky killing the pub trade on prices

I think the sneaky way, that Sky go about checking if the pub, has paid, is by using the Sky logo outside the pub, and you won't know, if the guy from Sky has been, to use his, scanner. And the funny thing is that, l would love VM to go into the pub trade, can you the imagine the aggro, that would cause,.

That doesn't make much sense Arthur? Can you rephrase it? I'm struggling to see how that logo can be a sneaky way of saying a pub has paid and am pretty sure Sky can't oblige a pub to display any sort of logo on their wall?

Comma overload by the way

I think he is talking about the sky "beer" logo that shows in the bottom corner of live events (only in pubs..and it randomly comes off and on when sky say so)

Unsure though

When a pub has paid the proper commercial tariff for its Sky subscription, there should - always, IIRC - be a pint glass logo in the corner of the screen. This is a simple method by which Sky operatives can spot whether the pub is defrauding Mr Murdoch of his rightful millions by trying to get away with paying domestic rates.

I believe Sky has also trialled a minor ad campaign whereby it tried to get community-minded members of the public to grass on pubs whose screens did not display this logo. I bet they got a lot out of that. Not.

Re: Sky killing the pub trade on prices

Well I have seen pubs with Telewest and NTL and they had Sky sports ect....

They probably do charge a lot more than residential tariffs although it will still be a lot cheaper than Sky.

Perhaps anyone on here working/managing or owning a pub should contact NTL Telewest Business www.ntltelewestbusiness.co.uk

Or 0800-052-0800

Although the TV service may well be branded as Virgin TV.

Re: Sky killing the pub trade on prices

Just at a guess I'd imagine Sky have a clause in their contracts with the likes of VM that prevents VM from offering Sky products, eg Sky Sports, at a cheaper rate than themselves.

No chance that'd be an unfair contract. I'd imagine they just make sure that the likes of VM have to pay enough that they take a loss if they undercut Sky's retail price

Re: Sky killing the pub trade on prices

virgin do not install into public houses and in the case where we install in the "flat" above, if they then show it in the bar they get a letter from sky and we have to disconnect them

Its not random and certainly nothing to do with encryption.
Its there during programmes and drops during adverts. Prevents pubs creating a permanent logo.

Re: Sky killing the pub trade on prices

Hi Broadbandings, just in case, l didn't phrase it properly, if you go to any pub, that has Sky, you will see a badge on the window, that say's Sky, it is the size of a pint glass, that has a bar code on it, that put a scanne on it, and bingo, and that tells Sky if they have paid there bill.

Err, after talking to 2 different landlords, all have confirmed the logo is random and is not on all the time.

Also confirmed by people at digitalspy also.

I don't think it's sold as a product any more, however the are a few out there and they are considerably cheaper than Sky. Also has no On-Demand capabilities as we (ntl:Telewest Business) have not bought a license for it.

Please sort out your grammar, its terrible to read!

I must say on the logo front, i've only ever seen it dissapear when the adverts are on. Each time i've been to the pub to watch a match when its been on sky, its always in the bottom right hand corner.

I always thought it just meant they were paying the business package of sky.
