comcast
Hi, I'm from America but this was the only cable forum I could find I hope you will be able to help me with my problem. I have a cable modem going to a router and powering 3 computers I really want to have cable television one one of these computers and I want it to work independantly of the tv (I will buy a tuner card if needed) how would I essentially get the tv from the ethernet cable coming out of my router?

Re: comcast
You don't, the cable (co-axial) will have to be split (using a T-piece) before the cable goes into the modem with the other lead then going into a STB or Cable card for the PC and has nothing to do with the ethernet coming out of the modem.

Oh just to clarify in the UK you're not allowed to put a NON-VM STB or PC Cable card onto the network, I'd check to make sure that this rule doesn;t apply to ComCast in the US either

Re: comcast
thanks, I kind of figured that but my dad has a problem with splitting the cable because I'm not sure how comcast would react and I do not want to call the cable guy to do it, I'll probably just end up not doing it. Thanks though, by the way how do I mark a thread solved?

Re: comcast
We normally just leave it open as others might have a suggestion that no-ones thought of, but if you have a good reason you as the OP can ask for a thead to be closed.

I've been thinking of using my PC as a 2nd TV. Is there no way I can get a 2nd VM STB and use it with a PC then?

Yes, that's what I intend to do. Thanks Stuart.
Obviously my question wasn't clear. I meant was it possible to use a PC/TV card with a VM STB. If so, do any of you have any reccomendations?

Re: comcast
Just use a video cature device (normally a USB2 device) and feed the Audio/video into it, no need for a cable TV card

Re: comcast
Dunno if the OP is still around, but he should quite happily be able to get a coaxial splitter (like the ones VM use to split the cable for CM and STB) and take one of the outputs from that to a QAM or DVB-C card for your computer. AFAIK the regs for US cable providers are very different to ours - I believe they have an 'open access' mandate for some local channels.

Which is what I already said to him Only added the "here in the UK" bit to make it clear to our mainly UK members that this is a special case
