Giving away my Sky+ box to neighbour
Hi, re above comment.
I'm getting rid of Sky today, and promised my next door neighbour the box.
It's the old Sky+ box, and can only record programmes.
Will it be as straightforward as we think. Just a case of rerouting the cable to his living room and connecting the box to his TV?
He is a Sky subscriber and has the full Sports package as well.
Does he have to contact Sky to have his viewing card upgraded, or will it just pick it up?
Thanks

Rerouting the cable ? Can you explain that a bit more because it sounds a bit odd ...

Re: Giving away my Sky+ box to neighbour
I think you need 2 signals in a Sky + box. (one for recording, one for viewing presumably). With only one signal you'd only be able to record the signal you're watching.

Re: Giving away my Sky+ box to neighbour
There will be 2 signals, the cable will be rerouted from my satellite dish.
i.e. It's being pushed out of the hole in my wall, and through the hole in his wall.
Sorry if I wasn't clear - I knew what I meant!

You will need to phone Sky to get his viewing on the Movies/Sports switched on.The normal pay channels will work but not those. That also applies to the recording as well.
He may also need to connect the Sky+ box to a phone line for the first year.(I did when I got Sky+despite me being a customer for years)

Re: Giving away my Sky+ box to neighbour
But if he's already paying for sports, and he's going to put his card in, wouldn't it just pick it up?
Would they make a charge?
Will he have to start a new contract with them as well?
We were hoping it would be as easy as plugging it in and away they go.....

Do they not pair the cards to the boxes?

I don't know. If he still wants it he can sort that side out.
I'll tell him to ring them first before he faffs about with it.

Yes they do, not only that but the card has to have the recording enabled.
When I had my Sky upgraded to Sky+ I thought I would get a new viewing card, but the installer phoned up and got it enabled on the old card while pairing it to the new box.

No,
When my Sky+ went faulty & I swapped to my old standard box until the Sky+ could be replaced,I had to phone up & get the card paired to the box in order to get my movies & sports on. You will see the message "This is the wrong card, please call 123456789) on the sports & movie channels until the card is paired. He would get the likes of Sky 1 ect but they would be turned off eventually if the pairing was'nt done.
The is no charge.

Re: Giving away my Sky+ box to neighbour
Thanks everyone, my only worry is that he will have to pay, but then it's down to him isn't it?
One question though, for me.
I still have a couple of programmes on the box that I would like to back up to dvd, will I still be able to once sky+ is cancelled?

Re: Giving away my Sky+ box to neighbour
If he pushes his card in the Sky + Box - it will be the very basic channels - nothing, no sky one, no movies, nada, nowt, zilche.
Best to ring Sky - tell them hes been given a plus box, they will do the rest.

Re: Giving away my Sky+ box to neighbour
you need a dual or quad LNB mate once you'v replaced the old LNB you just connect the two coax cables to the Sky+ box. make sure that you (or he) uses electricians tape when you connect the coax to the LNB, so that water doesnt get into it. also the card will need to be paired with the Sky+ box just ring Sky to have them do it.
