Re: Getting Sky Hd without Bt Phone Line>?

Not a chance , my friend had normal sky installed the other week , he didn't have a bt line either and the 'dodgy' engineer told him to ring sky and tell them he was having the phone line installed the next day "could they switch sky on" , would not do it at all , bit silly really .

Re: Getting Sky Hd without Bt Phone Line>?

even old non hd sky needs a phone line as the installer needs to dial home to sky from the Box under the NEW INSTALL OPTION on the BOX.
The interactive options on the boxes are providing you with the discounted box, so if your phone line is not there and you get a grumpy installer, he will be even more grumpy when he leaves.
Any land line is fine does not need to be BT, NTL phone lines are EX directory and don't allow the sky boxes to call home normally. So he had to set up the boxes manualy Via his own phone. He did not remember that 141 needed entering in the Sky box. Silly man.
Sky CAN activate your Card Via Satellite only if the correct details have been added by the Installer before hand.
They do it all the time when I Pay late over the phone.

Re: Getting Sky Hd without Bt Phone Line>?

You can use ether a BT line or Virgin Media Line. If you inform Sky you have no phone line they usually allow it if you pay a £25 fee. If you take Multiroom you MUST have a phone line and a point for ALL boxes. Without paying this fee the Sky box must be connected to a phone line for 12 months. If you need to unplug it you have roughly 24 hours to reconnect it, any longer and you will most likely get a call from Sky asking why the box hasn't phoned home.

If you plan to move house all you need to do is call them.

We have SkyHD on a Virgin Media phone line at the moment and it is working fine. The installer couldn't call home so he called CS and got the box activated and soon after the box could successfully call home and use all the interactive services.

SkyHD is far superior to Virgin's TV in both SD quality and HD channel offerings although Virgin's OnDemand is at present much more superior.

EDIT: Forgot to mention. If you tell Sky you are getting a BT Line installed they may allow you to get it installed and activate the viewing card yourself once you have a phone line installed. Although, I hear that Sky have bolted down on doing this since the new year. The first thing our installer said is "Before I start, do you have a phone line? Without one I can't do a thing!".

Re: Getting Sky Hd without Bt Phone Line>?

When our Sky was installed the engineer was quite insistent about the phone line, although its not necessary.

Sky also insist that you should keep your box plugged in to the phone line at all times, but that is not necessary - the connector to the phone socket broke a few weeks after it was installed (thanks to a clumsy American friend and a poorly placed router plugged into the same socket) and the only issues that have arisen are the occasional message on the TV telling us to plug the phone line back in so. We haven't, as I honestly don't care about Sky Bet or the other stuff that uses the line, and performance hasn't suffered.

Re: Getting Sky Hd without Bt Phone Line>?

As far as I am aware, if you use Sky Multiroom (regardless of whether you use any premium rate stuff), you need a phone line, but it does not have to be BT. If you have multiroom, and don't have each box connected to the phone, Sky will just charge the full price for any extra boxes. This is done to stop people getting multiroom deals, then giving a box to friends/family.

If you don't use Sky Multiroom, and don't use any premium rate stuff, then you may not need a phone line (although I don't know if Sky need to send something to activate the box).

Actually it is so be prepared for either big bill (The subsidised STB is provided by BIB on condition you keep the STB connected to a phoneline for the first 12 months) or getting cut off for breach of T&C's.
If you have multi-room,then it's full price packages for each STB.

No,
You are required to have a working phoneline before install,When the engineer calls & cant do the job because of no phoneline, then the work order will be cancelled,
This also will lead to the Sky BBand & Sky Talk order being cancelled as well if it's all ordered together.
As for the £25.00 no phoneline install, this only applies to standard installs.
Had this problem loads of times.
