Thomson hard drive recorder and Top up TV

Does anyone have one of these?

How good is it?

I'm presuming I don't need to use the top up tv stuff?

How does that work? Can I watch the top up tv channels live I'd do I have to wait for the programming to build up on the hard drive?

Cheers for your help

I have one of these upstairs and currently on the one month trial of anytime. UKTV Gold, Eurosport and UKTV Style you can watch live but they are not on for their full hours. The rest of the stuff you have to wait to download overnight and you can choose which channels you want it to download shows from. I think it's pretty good and even if you don't subscribe to the Top Up stuff its good just for the PVR function. It has a search facility on the 14 day guide and it has series links.

Re: Thomson hard drive recorder and Top up TV

I got one today ,and i have to say that for such a cheap prv its pretty dammed good . As ben said you get a 14 day tv guide , you also get twin recorders so you can watch 1 channel while recording another ( or record 2 at once ) . The timeshift facility is pretty nifty , the instant you start watching a channel it starts buffering into memory so that you can rewind , record , pause the tv and the like . It works much better than my old bush pvr , that "thing" used to hang up everytime i tried to do anything other than watch tv . I dont have a card yet so i cant tell you how good the top up anytime works .

Re: Thomson hard drive recorder and Top up TV

Its a piece of rubbish....to be blunt.
The software is VERY buggy. I'm sure if you do a search for forums for this machine you will find out all the problems.
I've had mine about a month and so far i've found it locks up or gives no signal display, jitters when watching live tv while the buffer is on (now switched off). Problem deleting recordings, problem setting recordings as it says it has a clash (when it doesn't) and most annoying of all it skips back to the previous point when you fast forward.

The only reason for keeping it at present is because of the series link recording, and it has an RF modulator. I'm also hoping they will eventually download software that does what it should do.

Re: Thomson hard drive recorder and Top up TV

Firstly welcome to the site

I've removed your 'swearing - just watch that in future ' It's a family site so no trying to get past the swear filter

Mine hasn't frozen it must be said

I just had a look and mine didn't mention any updates last night.

I'd be inclined to try unplugging it for a while then plugging it back in.

If that don't work call the manufacturors.

Thumbs down Re: Thomson hard drive recorder and Top up TV

Still got my Thompson recorder/top up tv which is not used even though I'm tied into a 12 month contract Had nothing but problems with it, failed recordings, unable to view channel 5 etc etc, freezing. Phoned numerous times to support, gave up in the end and went back to cable tv

Re: Thomson hard drive recorder and Top up TV

Well I rang up disconnections yesterday as the letter said if I don't want to carry on after my free trial I had to cancel no later than the 24th and they offered me £5 a month for all of anytime including picturebox for for 3 months and then ring back near the end of the 3 months for another deal! So I thought why not?!

Nice deal but why were you phoning disconnections in the first place?

because I didn't want the service as my one month free trial is coming to an end I didn't fancy paying £14.99 a month for a service that I only occasionally use as I have VM downstairs but watch Top Up TV Upstairs as my computer is upstairs.

Re: Thomson hard drive recorder and Top up TV

Still waiting...
Downloaded the new firmware a few days ago, and I cant see ANY improvement at all.
It still skips while in fast forward or rewind and it still jitters when live playback mode is on.
I guess I'll have to wait another 6 months for another download that doesn't work.
Am I the only one having these problems?
