Single tuner by look of it and to be honest it's not down to the salesperson to tell you every last detail about the item just in case it's something you may need to know at some point. You really do need to investigate purchases like this before you buy so that you know you are getting what you need.

Your old TV never allowed you to watch one channel and record another. Your TV had a tuner and your VCR had another tuner which allowed it to record a channel.
You now have a TV with a digital tuner but what you don't have is a recorder with a digital tuner. Thats why you need the second STB, to act as a digital tuner for your existing VCR.
You should still be able to watch a digital TV channel on your TV whilst recording an analogue channel on your VCR.

Those dual tuner hard-drive recorders have dropped in price quite a lot lately...

People don't like spending money though. VCR's used to cost alot more than current dual tuner recorders.

Re: tv with b/in free view

Haven't used a VCR in ages....

I do however Have one of those HDD recorders although I never actually get around to watching most of the stuff I record on it...

Also have a dvd-recorder hooked up to the sky although very rarely is there something on that I actually need to record since its bound to be repeated sooner or later.
