Extended warranty of SKY boxes

Hello,
I am new to this forum joined today.
My first year contract with Sky is coming to an end this December, therefore I am looking to get Extended warranty on my Sky+ and 1 digi box.
An insurance company recomended by Sky is offering £99.00 per year which is the cheapest from all the others that have called me so far.
Can some one advice or guide me in the right direction?

Hi James,

1. to Cable Forum.

2. You've posted this in the Virgin Media section, so I would imagine it will be moved some time soon.

3. You may be interested in the replies I got to a question which is on a similar topic to yours.

For what it's worth Sky themselves offer the protection for £99 per year, so I wouldn't go with a company 'recommended' by them when you can get it directly from them.

I've been plagued by morons ringing me up claiming to be 'calling from' or 'calling on behalf of' Sky. All that's happened is that Sky have sold them my name and number, when pressed they will admit that they don't represent Sky and that Sky haven't *specifically* endorsed/recommended them

If the insurance is being offered by Domestic and General take it mate, I've had a few policies covered by Domestic and General and they are spot on, they are fast at carrying out repairs.

Re: Extended warranty of SKY boxes

Sky will charge you a minimum of £60 or £65 I believe, personally I have never had insurance with Sky as I've been a customer since the Analog days with them and everytime I have a fault they take me down the "you'll have to pay route" to which my normal response is "no I won't"!

I would check the policy to make sure it covers all your equipment - DISH, LMB, Cables, Box etc. One dodgy area is usually the coax as SKY "engineers" that are non-SKY workforce just contracted firms only get so much cable from SKY repaid not what they use.

£99 for a year , imo you must be mad , these boxes are built to last longer than that , after 2 years the hard drive in my sky+ box went kaput and sky were good enough to offer a repair for £65 , after a heated discussion on the phone told them where they could stick their service and bought myself a new hard drive (with twice the storage they were offering) and fitted using one of the online guides , all in all cost me £23 , not had a problem since. would certainly not pay £99 a year for insurance on a box that only cost £200 new , as for the digibox you could pick one up on ebay for a small sum £20 - £30 pounds if that. have had skydigital since it was launched and the HD fault with sky+ has been the only one , maybe i am lucky but would seriosly consider whether insurance is neccesary.

Re: Extended warranty of SKY boxes

Sky servicing is an area heavily populated by junk callers, and dodgy practices.

I remember when extended warranties / servicing insurance was common on TVs - because they were expensive, and the reliability was a problem.

With much of todays electronics, reliability has improved, and in most cases you would be paying more than it would cost to replace, by the time it does need attention. The question is, what will it cost as a worst case, the difference between repair/replacement and the price of the first year of extended cover.

The other thing, of course, is how far are Sky prepared to go to keep a customer.
