DAB on Freeview/Virgin?
Anybody know much about digital radio via Freeview? Or via Virgin cable, for that matter, as I have both… is this the same as DAB? In other words, is there any need at all for me to buy a DAB radio when I can listen to the same quality on Freeview…

Re: DAB on Freeview/Virgin?
I would say not, but obviously it won't sound as good unless you connect it to a Hi-Fi

Re: DAB on Freeview/Virgin?
I've been told that the bitrates on Freeview are actually higher tham DAB, so if you have a decent sound system in your telly, or have the box plugged into a hifi, you will get better sound view Freeview.

Re: DAB on Freeview/Virgin?
Yeah, sorry – it was the bitrates I was concerned about, I suppose.
My TV and everything are connected to the hi-fi, and I’m thinking do I still need my old, expensive analogue tuner… and my cassette deck… and my CD player…

Re: DAB on Freeview/Virgin?
The only problem you may get is the analogue out section of a freeview box will probably not be as nice as a £180 separates DAB tuner. If you've got an outboard DAC then grab a freeview box with optical out and you're made in the shade. Or a Samsung V box if you can get one.
And yes, the bitrates are higher.

Ummm… yes. Please be gentle with me, I’m new to all this… I just have SCART from the ultra-cheapo Freeview box (Digihome £20 job from Argos), going to the RGB SCART on the telly. Then I have tapped the audio outs from the back of the SCART going into the TV, and fed them to my amp.
Is that what you mean by Analogue Outs? But whatever, I expect it’ll be enough for my blurry old ears…

Re: DAB on Freeview/Virgin?
My bad. I went all HiFi loser on you there. And yes, sounds like you're spot on there. You might be better off (even with your 'blurry old ears') if you get a freeview box with analogue outs so you're not using a SCART converter. I might dig out my old Philips OnDigital box to see what the SQ is like on that...
