Sky TV: Extended Warranty

Afternoon

I've had Sky (just the base package) since about February of this year. Last night I received a telephone call from a very pleasant lady who said that she was 'calling me on behalf of Sky'.

She then proceeded to tell me that as my first year subscription as coming to an end 'soon' (actually.....another few months yet) I would no longer be covered for any problems with the dish or box. She then said that for the princely sum of about £6.00 pcm I could purchase an additional warranty which would cover me against all sorts of things (breakdown of the box or dish, storm damage to the dish, failure in any of the equipment for any reason even accidental).

TBH I wasn't quite sure what to say for a couple of reasons:

1. Nobody had ever told me that after the first year I owned the box, and was therefore effectively on my own as far as any problems were concerned, and
2. I hadn't got a clue where this woman was from (I'm guessing she wasn't from Sky), or whether this was a 'pucker' Sky arrangement.

I'm guessing Sky gave her the number (naughty Sky ), but beyond that I haven't got a clue.

Anybody else had this?
Anybody say yes to this offer?
Am I really 'on my todd' if I don't take out some sort of extended warranty type cover?
Do Sky offer anything themselves, or do I need to go to a third party to get support?
If the box dies a horrible death what do I do about replacing it? Is it cheaper to buy one (eBay anybody?) than to pay £72 per year for cover?

Thoughts?

Ta

Re: Sky TV: Extended Warranty

When my warranty ran out with sky - if I had a fault with my box they did indeed try to charge me the £65 callout fee (which will give you a new box if that's the problem btw).

But I always got it free by pointing out that I'd just leave if I had to pay to have it fixed.

Re: Sky TV: Extended Warranty

Hmmm.....

So, I can either pay £72 for a year of cover, or stump up the £65 in the event that I do have to call an engineer out (unless I can convince them to give me a freebie.....) - I like them choices

Cheers

Re: Sky TV: Extended Warranty

If it breaks down outside warranty then do what we did.... ring up to cancel We got a brand new Sky+ box plus installation for nothing as long as we stayed another 12 months

In the same way you're on your own if your telly or PC breaks down.

Re: Sky TV: Extended Warranty

as the others have pointed out.

Even if you paid for a engineer visit its cheaper then the cover anyway.
Just saying ok I will leave then makes them fix for free.

Ah yes, but, I would normally buy a new TV, with a 12 month warranty, but which I could reasonably expect to last longer than 12 months.

When Sky put me on a *new* contract (first installation) they issued me a refurbished box.....

I don't worry too much about PC repairs.....any excuse for an upgrade

You should have got a new box - if you didn't then you need to have a word. If you pay for new you should get new!

Re: Sky TV: Extended Warranty

not sure if it is, but could well be Satellite Direct, there's quite a bit about them Here, and that's just one site.

naughty naughty. as i very much doubt that they could get your details out of thin air, looks like they are either trying the phone book in pot luck that they get something right (and they don't seem to care/abide by tps and call anyway), or getting hold of your details from sky somehow.

and by reading around, their warrenty isn't exactly worth the paper it's written on. oh and just by coincidence they seem to have a tie-up with play.tv to

Got spamcalled by those jerks, and we don't even have Sky - never deal with junkdialling scum, it only encourages them.

And yes, they DO violate TPS, silentbuster and everything else.

Taken from Down The Pub's link:

Helen Says:
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:06 pm I also have had problems with Satellite Assured. They conned me in the same way and when I complained they were abusive and said that I could not cancel for 12 months. I sent 2 letters by registered post, both returned (not known at this address). The addresses were taken off he warrenty certificate that they sent in the first place. I complained to Trading Standards about them. The BBC are going to do a programme about Satellite mis-selling and I am sure that the name Satellite Assured will feature.
Let's hope so!!
