Satellite Dish

My daughter has just moved out, in her new house the previous owner has left a dish, theres loads of wires in the living area, which I presume are connected to the dish.......now, she cant afford to subscribe to sky, but is there any way she can use the dish, without having to have sky?? I'm not an expert at these things, but is there a cheap alternative to sky contracts???
