Philips TV Problem

I have a 26" flat screen conventional crt philips telly. Recently horizontal coloured lines about 2-3mm thick have been flashing across the screen. They do this intermittently. I've lived with it but now the tv is switching itself off with a sort of deep "beeyong" sound. Leave it for a while and I can switch it back on. Local telly repair man says it's not worth fixing as it's typical of this set. It's just over 5 years old. He says the high voltage switching it on-off is affecting the processing chip or something like that. He also waved an electro-magnet over it saying he has redistributed dust particles in the tube!
Lasted a day.
Any thoughts.
Cheers.

Re: Philips TV Problem

Sounds like the crt probably cost more to fix than it's worth.Had to laugh at his remark about dust particles in tube, the device he used was a degaussing coil, and it's only used to de magnetise a tv,the symptoms of which are coloured patches on the the picture usually red or green.
