I was about to purchase a freesat card can anyone tell me if I have to enter into a contract and if so how long

No contract required. You will have to buy your dish and box if you don't have them already though, and you won't get a free install.

The card is supposed to last 3 years before renewal. It enables you to get channel 4 & 5, which at this point in time are encrypted. There is not
the same breadth of channels as Freeview however.
