Must admit, and please don't take offence, but I don't really follow that.

What is going to be free?

Will the letters include the persistently elusive channel line up?

Also, what date do you mean? The installation date or the service go-live date?

Did they give any idea of when the letter would be sent? I'll freely admit to still be extremely sceptical about the whole thing but offering to send out mass mailings in the middle of the worst RM strikes in recent history offers another excuse for another delay.

Also, did they give you any information on why you paid the money you already have and what you can expect in terms of payments going forward? (I assume that they're not offering it free forever?)

How can you phone PlayTV on behalf of another customer? Surely this breaks the DPA?

Do you have a hotline into them or something?

Re: Play TV?

I called to cancel my order & get my money back. I got a very pleasant guy who agtually DID call back as arranged when he had checked he could refund one of teh £29.99 install charges if I agred to wait as apparently loads of boxes have gone out on trial. They sent 1000's lettes out last Tuesday!! They need to know what broadband people have, if the wireless router has spare capacity to run the box & if it is over 2Mb's or something plus a signature. i asked if he could email it but he said they still needed the signature. However, I DID also get a list of the channels available which seem to be most but Sky ones themselves. The DVD channel (7000 I think) is HD. I agreed not to cancel for a couple of weeks to see if I get the 'letter'. So far I have also got 2 months free as I keep complaining about the cost of the calls. As i say..at least I got a Call back and the guy's name & extention #. Any more news from anyone? Thanx for the advice on the D.D. byt the way.

That's not your problem - if you request a refund for a service that you've been charged for but not yet receiving then a refund should be granted without any issues.

And? How do we know this is true? Are they stupid? Do they know about the postal strike??

Absolute BS - broadband is broadband to an extent - more delaying tactics - surely you have already signed a contract hence why they've taken money!

Have to agree with that. A large portion of their customers will only know what broadband they're paying for (i.e. up to 8mb) rather than what they're getting (say 1mb or 2mb). Confused as to why they're asking about wireless capacity when the average customer won't know that without some capacity throughput testing and an idea of the bandwidth requirements of the service. Not to mention the intention on their website is to use homeplug rather than wireless.

I'm very dubious about that HD DVD channel - I've still not seen a satisfactory explanation on how they plan on streaming HD over a 2mb connection. I wonder if this would work like Skys "on-demand" service - downloading a film to a portion of the harddrive and then take it or leave it.

I'm glad to see some form of movement forward for those who have signed up for this but I still haven't seen enough to make me trust them yet - we've gone from a go live date in September to a go live date in October to a go live date in December. Meanwhile Craig has his installation due in November. Not to mention the inconsistencies we're still seeing between their website and what people like Wendy and Craig are kind enough to post.

It sounds to me like you've been had by a silver-tongued, career BS-er who has been employed by Play to try to prevent people doing what you, quite reasonably, have been trying to do - cancel the 'service'.

Unfortunately now you have agreed to wait an additional period of time for them to deliver on their contract with you, there's not a lot you can do about it ... but if I were you, should it come to the end of your 'couple of weeks' - I'd take that to be 14 days from the date of your phone call - I would be on to them again and cancelling, no messing about and no allowing myself to be sweet-talked by anyone.

Sadly you have got absolutely no evidence that a single word this person said to you is true. You have taken rather a lot on trust, when they have given you no reason to trust them.

Please, be careful!

It's not quite been 2 weeks yet, but as the postal strikes are pretty much over (for now!) I'm curious as to whether you got "the letter" or heard anything else at all from them.

Play TV UK Lands Global Broadcast Rights For The Fight Network.

6 September 2007: British broadcaster, PlayTV UK, has signed a contract for the distribution rights to the world’s biggest, 24 hour, combat sports channel, The Fight Network (TFN), based in Canada. This deal utilises UK-based Global Digital Broadcast’s IPTV management platform and advanced engineering, making it possible to stream the popular TFN content out of Toronto and to a global audience of fight fans.

The eight new PlayTV/The Fight Network channels include; one 24/7 live stream and seven specialist channels, featuring mixed martial arts from the USA, the UK and Japan. Content is available as live, scheduled, video-on-demand (VoD) and pay-per-view (PPV).

Mr. George Burger, president and CEO of The Fight Network, says: “It is immensely exciting to be carried on this cutting-edge platform, developed by PlayTV. Our strategic priority is to expand The Fight Network brand around the world, on all platforms, to reach every fight fan, everywhere, at any time. The technology that PlayTV and its partners have developed enable speciality services, like ours, with our genuinely unique sports content package and huge fan appeal, to reach audiences in ways which were not previously available. Broadband delivery is the future and the future is here with PlayTV.”

The Fight Network is already hugely successful across Canada, delivering the best of mixed martial arts (MMA), the fastest-growing combatant sport (featuring brands such as Montreal’s TKO, the UK’s own Cage Rage and Rumble on the Rock from Hawaii); boxing (including specialist Ballroom Boxing and Guilty Boxing); wrestling (featuring Ring of Honour and Memphis Wrestling); and other combat styles, along with fight theme films (with underground material from Tough-Guy Cinema), documentaries, television series and breaking news. Support, insight and ‘star power’ appeal are provided by leading MMA, boxing and wrestling personalities, including the MMA renowned official, “Big” John McCarthy and the current heavyweight champion, Randy “The Natural” Couture (both of whom contribute on-air analysis for the network).

Launched in September 2005, The Fight Network is available on virtually every cable and satellite carrier across Canada. In addition, its weekly radio show, The LAW (Live Audio Wrestling), is heard on terrestrial stations in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, while its daily show, Fight Network Radio, is heard across North America on Siruis channel 186, hosted by Mauro Ranallo. Its news content and exclusive merchandise is also marketed on its website. Support, insight and ‘star power’ appeal are provided by leading MMA, boxing and wrestling personalities, including the MMA renowned official, “Big” John McCarthy and the current heavyweight champion, Randy “The Natural” Couture (both of whom contribute on-air analysis for the network).

Mr. David Reynolds, director of PlayTV UK, says: “We knew Global Digital Broadcast could take PlayTV global and our imminent launch is made all the more exhilarating with deals of this stature. It is certainly a great accolade for a British platform to be hosting eight channels from the world’s leading MMA and combatant sports network.”

Mr. David Wray, co-founder and director of Global Digital Broadcast, comments: “The GDB platform is a perfect fit for these guys and I can see The Fight Network becoming a leading sports multi-channel on PlayTV, especially with the ever-growing number of fight fans in the UK.”

Mr. Jim Deans, co-founder and managing director of Global Digital Broadcast, adds: “Seeing this deal come to fruition just as we are heading out to Amsterdam to demonstrate the portal at IBC2007, means that we can include The Fight Network in our trade launch at one of the most prestigious technology conventions in the world.”

ENDS
