Again teaboy is possibly a low level telesales guy who may just have enough information to do the job. and no more. It may be in the commercial Interest of play TV to limit the amount of information until the service is launched on the 1st of September. I believe we should at least see what they have to offer before we demonise this company, and if they do offer a good alternative to what is offered from Sky or Virgin, then good luck to them.

3 HD content is widely available now (there are numerous HD channels broadcasting now), what you are doing is masking the fact that all this box does (if indeed any boxes are ever delivered) is upscale standard def pictures - BUT the box can' upscale live or streaming TV, it can only upscale recordings (as noted on your company's sign up form - http://www.go-to.org.uk/playtv/ -

General broadband can be used to stream general TV broadcast and not HDTV, they claim to "upscale" these streams to HD quality. Try looking at some of these cheap HDTVs at asda/tesco broadcasting normal TV, the picture quality is worse than viewing from a normal tv sets, however some of these expensive Sony TV with a decent "upscaler" the picture quality can be improved vastly. Even some of these expensive DVD players will claim to have a built in "upscaler". I think when playtv say they upscale to HD quality is that you don't need to depend on the cheap upscaler built into the HDTV set. I don't think they will stream HDTV (non upscaling) quality however they do claim on the website "HD, High Definition video library", which i believe would need to be uploaded to the set top box first before its viewed.

I use BT Vision and have used Homechoice (now called Tiscali TV) as well as Sky and Virgin Media in the past. IPTV needs a line speed of at least 2MB to function properly (especially if you want to use your broadband on your PC too). The issue is not about whether or not you have a 25/1 or 50/1 contention ratio connnection (the lower the ratio the fewer people you are 'competing' with for broadband bandwidth), the line speed itself is vital too - if it runs on 500kb, it is not broadcast-quality IPTV. [/p]
|
I think they claim the service will broadcast FROM 500kbs upwards, and the quaility will depend upon your connection speed and internet provider. I use joost a free p2p IPTV service, who plans to intergrate the service into TV sets, which only broadcasts at 500kbs,and also claims "TV broadcasting quality". Even babelgum broadcasts at 500kb and even BT vision once claimed before the launch that the service would broadcast from 500kb. I dont see the point your trying to make.
You also made a claim because they are a small company they will not be able to deliver the service. Joost is also a small iptv company, already watched by over million viewers after just a few months. Plus "Global Digital Broadcast" has been developing the technology for the past 5 years. Again I would like to see this service before coming to a rash judgement.
Thanks.
John.

Re: Play TV?
John
the difference between Joost and PayTV is that the founders of Joost have a track record of delivering products, and Pay TV don't - it makes a difference (to me, anyway).
Oh, the other major difference is that Joost is free, and PayTV want to lock people into a 12 month contract before they see anything; caveat emptor, anyone?

Re: Play TV?
Well, 1st September has now come and gone.
No fanfares or people praising a smooth install, good TV service, etc. In fact, nothing at all - the website still has the same lack of information as before.
Has anyone heard anything else on this or have our suspicions been confirmed?

Re: Play TV?
Play tv is a sister company of Satellite Direct uk who by all accounts have invested quite heavily, both in time and money, into this new product. They are based at Ford near Arundel.

Oh look - another first time poster, defending/promoting PlayTV.
That happens so rarely on this thread.....
btw, both PlayTV and Satellite Direct are based in the same building (well, postcode), and the "by all accounts" tend to be their own marketing info, rather than independent viewpoints (imho).

Which is the exact reason we are informing people to beware of PlayTV! Thanks for confirming the relationship Satellite Direct UK!

Re: Play TV?
Satellite Direct in court Grauniad
"In his ruling, Mr Justice Briggs described one of the sales techniques used by telesales staff of Satellite Direct and its sister company Satcover as "a blatant lie".
The judge also found that in many cases, the sales agents did not correct the customer's misunderstanding that the agent was calling from Sky: "The transcripts show numerous instances where... the transaction completed without the sales agent putting right the customer's misapprehension." Referring to co-defendant John Crane, who worked with Reynolds for some of the time, the judge stated: "A more obvious case of deliberate passing off would be hard to imagine.""
Ooh, ooh! Let's give our money to their sister company, PlayTV - I am sure they will be equally trustworthy.

Actually, that is *not* normal practice. Apple tend to do that, but they are the only company that I know of that does. Apple also have a reputation (admittedly not always justified) for delivering reliable and innovative products and services, which they have earned over the last 30 years or so.
Play TV is a new company, and, therefore has no reputation good or bad. To launch with limited details of the company and products/services available is suicide.

I believe the distance-selling laws (which apply if you order over the web or from a telesales person) apply. These laws ENFORCE a cooling-off period. So, if Play TV cause problems, you at least have something you can take them to court with.

Re: Play TV?
I've not heard of anything yet on this I must admit.
One thing that gave me a laugh is that not only have they left the Joomla links on their webpage taking you to the free web design/content management system they've also left the links on the front home page to the website that provides the free Joomla templates.
Nice and professional

Re: Play TV?
I'm sure the story was go-live date was the 1st September - hence the reason I bumped this thread a couple of days ago.
I would hope as a fully paid up customer you'd have more information on the launch date! What install date did they give you?
