Re: Play TV?

Don't think a 14 day cooling off actually applies here yet as the service doesn't start until September...could be wrong though!

Its getting stranger every day, they have updated there website again and on the play entertainment pack

"Local TV - local news – events and entertainment from your town not region, Entertainment all the Freeview channels plus Comedy - Play Sci-Fi - Play Living – Gold and more, Kids CBBC, Cbeebies, C-ITV and many more, Music from all Genres plus PPV & VOD music, News, Local – Regional – National and International news, Documentaries, Play Discovery – Play History – People – Play Animals and more, Teletext, HD, High Definition video library, Shopping, Religion, Gaming, over 400 Games, Lifestyle including Food – Style - Fashion and more, Magazine TV (coming soon), Search TV, Google, Yahoo, Yell, Amazon, MSN, wikipedia, etc from the comfort of your living room."

Re: Play TV?

Im thinking of signing up just for the movie service, they are claiming to have film rights before Sky Movies which is very hard to believe. I will see the movie line up when the service launches, if the picture quality and programme line up is decent and for £10/month I dont see any reason not to sign up.

If there was a 14 day cooling off period after installation, then great but I dont believe this is the case.

John

If the service does turn out to be true to its word (very hard to believe) then great, at least there will be choice in the market. At the moment customers only have choice between Virgin and SKY or in many areas just Sky. I don't no about you, loads of folk are sick of the Sky service with no alternative. If they do deliver their promise service I cant see any reason why it wont be successful. I wish the company was more up front with more information on the product with out the conflicting statements.

Re: Play TV?

I have just tried cancelling what a nightmare. I won't receive my cashback for approx 4 wks, thats after head office has received my letter explaining why i want to cancel. It's like being bk at school. I am not happy about this. I kept getting the run around and I got sent over to a window and wheelie bin company. After that I believe this not to be cosher any reputable company would not send you on to another company twice on the same phone call.If I lose my £50 which is what I have just been told is to be taken out of my bank account £30 installation and £20 subscription fee, which i don't agree with as I am not receiving my service till 1st sept so why do i have to pay for my months subscription now.

Re: Play TV?

After noticing we have a few new members ( btw!) who seem to have joined initially to ask about PTV, I got curious. It seems that this thread is now the number 1 link from Google when search for "Play TV" and number 2 when searching for "PlayTV"!

Re: Play TV?

This may cause some confusion SonyPS3
"Sony has unveiled a TV tuner which plugs into the PS3 and turns it into a personal video recorder like Sky+.........

PlayTV for PS3 is a twin TV tuner that will launch in early 2008 in the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain with other countries to follow.
Recorded programmes can be streamed over a wireless internet connection to the portable PSP or transferred permanently to the handheld console via a USB cable. In a statement, David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said PlayTV would extend the "broad entertainment credentials of PS3". "

Exclamation Re: Play TV?

OK, let's not beat about the bush here, this is SOOO dodgy that it shocks me that anyone believes anything PlayTV say never minds signs up for it. That said, we're all human and make mistakes! Let's see if Teaboy can manage to reply to this post without resorting to abuse and can actually respond to all my points. [/p]

And Teaboy, before you try to belittle me or claim that I'm stupid, I know digital media, IPTV and broadband issues inside out and passed the Mensa entrance exams (and have an IQ in the top 0.5% of the population) so really, don't even think about it. [/p]

The messages from Teaboy are factually incorrect, abusive and only serve to show what a joke PlayTV is. I was so tempted to say lots of horrid things about Teaboy himself, but it's important that we don't give this company or its dubious reps a chance to dismiss the valid concerns we all have. [/p]

OK, time to correct some factual errors Teaboy: [/p]
1 NTL doesn't exist anymore [/p]
2 Virgin Media's cable TV is NOT sent down a phone line, it is sent via coaxial CATV and fibre-optic cables on its own exclusive network. [/p]
3 HD content is widely available now (there are numerous HD channels broadcasting now), what you are doing is masking the fact that all this box does (if indeed any boxes are ever delivered) is upscale standard def pictures - BUT the box can' upscale live or streaming TV, it can only upscale recordings (as noted on your company's sign up form - http://www.go-to.org.uk/playtv/ - that said, on your website you claim that it can upscale all images - so tell us, which one is correct?). As for supporting true HD channels, like BBC HD, this box will never be able to do that - so instead of obfuscating, just tell the truth. [/p]
4 The term 'warez' is very common on the internet and as a user of English, you should know that our language is constantly changing and adapting - abusing someone for using a common term like this is stupid, not the use of the term. Your posts are badly-written and riddled with grammatical and spelling errors, how dare you criticise other people for their spelling? [/p]
5 Regarding TPS - you do not have to register annually - please can all people who have are TPS registered report these calls via the TPS website ASAP. [/p]

I use BT Vision and have used Homechoice (now called Tiscali TV) as well as Sky and Virgin Media in the past. IPTV needs a line speed of at least 2MB to function properly (especially if you want to use your broadband on your PC too). The issue is not about whether or not you have a 25/1 or 50/1 contention ratio connnection (the lower the ratio the fewer people you are 'competing' with for broadband bandwidth), the line speed itself is vital too - if it runs on 500kb, it is not broadcast-quality IPTV. [/p]

I am deeply suspicious about the claim to have 700+ channels and thousands of hours of VOD content without giving any information about what is offered - I imagine that many of these channels are available for free on the internet and all this box does is stream those. How on Earth can a small start up company afford to launch hundreds of its own channels or buy in premium channels without charging an appropriate amount for them? Also, where is the VOD content sourced from? It is virtually impossible for a small company to offer this themselves, so who is providing it and what is on offer? I am starting to wonder if the box just lets you watch YouTube videos, but doubt it would be able to even do that!! [/p]

Teaboy has posted abusive comments about those who claim that they have been told blatent lies by PlayTV sales reps - this is disgusting and invites the question - how can Teaboy possibly know what all the sales reps are saying to every customer? He can't and I for one am much more inclined to believe numerous reports from a variety of sources saying that the company is lying to people that they shouldn't even be calling than Teaboy! [/p]

Regarding PlayTV's pathetic website - it's been built using Joomla, free open-source software and says more in what it omits to say than in the too-good-to-be-true spiel on there. This company is DODGY DODGY DODGY!! [/p]

There is so much wrong with this that it needs formal investigation. I strongly urge everyone who has been contacted by PlayTV (and especially those who've given them money) to contact Ofcom, the Information Commisioner and (most importantly) West Sussex Trading Standards (who can shut this pathetic outfit down and prosecute its directors). Please read the comments at http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=593543 - the directors behind this company seem to have a very dubious history indeed and have all the hallmarks of being habitual SCAM merchants. [/p]

I note that the only favourable articles about this on sites such as InformIT are badly-written, contain grammatical and spelling errors and look very much like unedited press-releases from PlayTV. [/p]

So come on Teaboy - bring it on: give us a full channel list, details of what will be on the VOD service and who is hosting it and respond to the many valid points above clearly, accurately and without abusing me!!
