Not if I can't see the service and the quality of that service before signing up for a year long contract, no I wouldn't.
I'd also do some research to try and find out other information about them. In this case, it found references to the people behind Play TV having links to other companies apparently known for poor customer service and general stitching the cutomer up.

At the risk of extending this debate into hitherto untouched territory - and the risk of a hurt response from 'teaboy' - I'd like to draw readers' attention to the added problem that this company has a very poor information and backup forum for potential customers. This alone make me shy away. The website is primitive, to say the least, gives no detail on T&Cs, has no contact phone number (except to the sales team), has no clear information on what we are buying into........ The list of omissions is long. To placate 'teaboy2' I'd like to add that if this package is genuine and deliverable I'd like to buy him/her a drink - if only for giving Mr Murdoch a bloody nose. Trouble is that the Mr Ms of this world know how to hit back, and hard. Is Playtv ready for this?

Re: Play TV?
You pay the £30 by credit card for installation, if they fail to install the service, you can claim it back from the credit card company.
Once they install the service I believe you have a LEGAL 14 day cooling off period.
If they go under, keep the settop box or dvr supplied.
If they fail to provide the PROMISE service with in the 12months contract I believe you can LEGALLY stop paying for the service.

Sorry - you make it sound sooo simple. It's not. Have you ever tried to leave a contract from telco provider? Believe me - I have and it's not an easy ride.
So we have a LOT to loose.

Well several thousand people can claim back from there credit card company.

Rubbish. You can put an informative, colourful, static website up in HTML in a couple of days, and pretty it up later when you have time and resources. That they have not done this - and never mind pretty, just quality information would do - speaks volumes to me about what sort of operation they are.

I agree, again as you i will wait tell the 1st of September, thats no point going from demonizing a service before it has even launched.

Then you have worked in some crap call centres. Internal Communications is my area of business, and I can assure you that 'need to know' is not a good way of doing business.

Take a company such as BT or TALKTALK, who will outsource their calls to oursource call centres. One reason why they will only tell staff what they need to know, and no more. You may have staff taking calls for BT one week then answering calls for talktalk another week. It may be in the commercial interest of PlayTV to limit the amount of information before launch.

Get real!!! It NEVER EVER works like that!
Just have a look at some of the threads here regarding messed up payments and customers ceasing payment because of lack of services - then see what happens.
It'll be yet more hassle for the consumer.
I for one will just sit back and watch to see what happens with PlayTV. If they do take off - then great - we have some competition, but from what I've read, I suspect that may not happen as quick as you / PlayTV make out.

The ofcom regulations only apply to TV broadcast and not the internet, should also be noted that the three 3g mobile service broadcasts r18 rated content which would not be allowed to be broadcasted on general TV

I agree, when they claim the service works on a half meg connection speed it does make me question the picture quality of the service. However I believe BT vision made a similar claim before their service was launched a year go. i have also used the only joost which works on just under 1/2meg.

If I sign up to their movie service I at least expect 9 streaming film channels showing the LATEST films and 70,000 ppv films availble. If they dont I will demand a refund or money back or simply cancel the direct debit. They are welcome to take me to court, and if they make false claim to the credit agancy I will sue them for defamation.

Re: Play TV?
70,000 ppv films - at 4Gb per film, that make 280 Terabytes of disk storage (and that's not counting mirroring, which takes it to 560Tb of disk, and if you have a Business Continuity / Disaster Recovery site, that takes it up to 1.2 Petabytes).
That's a lot of disk, not to mention the disk management required (and power, heat output, and cooling requirements).

Neither of them are blowing trumpets about HD platforms though - hence my earlier comments about the bandwidth requirements for HD vs the minimum requirements claimed for PlayTV.
The site also only promises to deliver content - it makes no claims or remarks about the viewing quality of the audio or video output you see. If they were being difficult, you'd struggle to legally stop paying because of crap picture quality because they never promised good quality.
And sueing them for defamation would fail to. You will have agreed to pay them to deliver a picture, of unagreed quality, which they will still be doing. They would be more within their rights to sue you for breach of contract than you would to sue them.

More like 3-500mb per film with compression.
Average mp2 avi movie is 750meg with avc it is average 400meg. I play these through a 1.5m wide projection with little / no pixelation. They will use a commercial grade compression so may be even lower.
that makes 28 Terabytes of disk storage (and that's not counting mirroring, which takes it to 56Tb of disk, and if you have a Business Continuity / Disaster Recovery site, that takes it up to 112 Terabytes).
Hardly a large amount 28tb is only £2800 worth or hard drives.
