Do you mind telling us how you saw PlayTV working then? Was it some kind of pre-launch demo?

Re: Play TV?
My mum just got a call from play tv and, has we have been thinking of getting some kind of extra tv service for a while, she jumped at the oppurtunity and payed the £30 start-up fee straight away, now I want to know how good it really is. The start up fee is much lower than virgin and the cost is slightly less per month than Sky and the channel mix looks very good (but no Simpsons ) looking at the past thread the reaction doesn't seem to be all that good from the forum experts but not many people seem to have hands-on expierience with the channel, so should I tell my mom to retract the money straight away? and what are people's expieriences from other channels (how good is virgin central?)?
p.s We have got unlimited broadband.

Re: Play TV?
I want to thank you guys for the very helpful comments about Playtv. I had a call yesterday, and yes, it sounded very inviting. Fortunately I told their rep to ring me back after I had done some research. Well, I've done a fair amount of research in my time, but none as uesless as this task - I couldn't find anything. Except, of course, their website, which was so basic as to be almost useless. I wanted to say more, but must dash - so thanks again. I won't be taking up their kind offer!
---------- Post added at 18:30 ---------- Previous post was at 16:41 ----------
At the risk of extending this debate into hitherto untouched territory - and the risk of a hurt response from 'teaboy' - I'd like to draw readers' attention to the added problem that this company has a very poor information and backup forum for potential customers. This alone make me shy away. The website is primitive, to say the least, gives no detail on T&Cs, has no contact phone number (except to the sales team), has no clear information on what we are buying into........ The list of omissions is long. To placate 'teaboy2' I'd like to add that if this package is genuine and deliverable I'd like to buy him/her a drink - if only for giving Mr Murdoch a bloody nose. Trouble is that the Mr Ms of this world know how to hit back, and hard. Is Playtv ready for this?

Re: Play TV?
When a company launches a new product it is very rare for them to put much on their websites or anywhere else, a classic example of this is Steve Jobbs and his Apple group. There will always be speculation as to what is going to happen at launch but the truth always stays underwraps until launch date. If play tv where to reveal their hand now it would result in the main competitors i.e sky and virgin taking defensive moves.
So just wait for the 1st september and playtv will be all over the net

I'd have to disagree with that and say most companies plug their offerings to try and get sales as soon as they can, apple are different because they have a proven track record in launching new or improved products very quickly after launch.
Personally I'd not shell out money to a company who have no track record and can't answer some basic questions about their product (or worse lie about it as the sales person tried to do to me)

Re: Play TV?
Thanks Derek. I agree with you. It's also noticable that the info absent from the Playtv website has no connection with the protection of comercial interests. I can't believe that a reputable company would expect anyone to sign up without knowing what it's product is about. Anyway, like LSainsbury and others above, I'm waiting to see how they overcome(?) the technical difficulties. If it's that easy, how come Virgin, or who ever, haven't jumped the queue?

Re: Play TV?
So in other words you would not buy anything from a new independent company?
God help all these new start up businesses across the country.
If they deliver the promise service I cant think of any reason for not trying the service. The only thing you would loss out on is the £30 connection charge. I cant think of any reason why the service would be a scam, if it was a scam what do you think they have to gain? Yes there website is sh** however the service is to be launched on the 1st September and it does take a few months for a decent website to be developed. You also say "can't answer some basic questions", worked in a call centre my self, they will only tell the staff what they need to know with little or no practical training.
You should also remeber iptv services are being launched over the next few months by orange, o2, virgin(adsl), pace, tiscali (expanded service) apple tv and a few others, do you have any information on these services? Why should playtv be any different from other iptv service limited the information before launch?
Thanks
John.

So what about that 1 year contract you've signed up to then?
Sorry - you make it sound sooo simple. It's not. Have you ever tried to leave a contract from telco provider? Believe me - I have and it's not an easy ride.
So we have a LOT to loose.

Well, the ones with pushy, badly informed sales reps and dodgy websites that don't tell you anything anyway.

Several thousand times £30, which is a lot of money. It can and does happen.

Rubbish. You can put an informative, colourful, static website up in HTML in a couple of days, and pretty it up later when you have time and resources. That they have not done this - and never mind pretty, just quality information would do - speaks volumes to me about what sort of operation they are.

Then you have worked in some crap call centres. Internal Communications is my area of business, and I can assure you that 'need to know' is not a good way of doing business. It is not how I operate and it is not how companies I have worked for operate. The only place that gets you is in a big mess and losing money. If that's how Play are treating their staff, then they really are doomed from the start.

Credible brands, industry-leading expertise, recognisable customer relations procedures ... will that do for starters?

Re: Play TV?
jgw2001, you forgot to mention in your post, which is almost exactly the same as the one you posted on DigitalSpy 29/7/7 DS, that you had applied for a job as an installer with them/Vehda (who are based at the same address, Imperium House, BN18 0DF).
And according to this post by an employee of the company, there will be 500,000 installed by mid-2008. Admin edit (Chris T): If you need to post a warning, don't post the link! "Just so you guys don't think we have gone to sleep, http://www.playtvuk.com this is the consumer part of GDBtv. We have 100,000 boxes going into the market by Xmas and a further 400,000 by middle of next year. I am interested in content share deals for quality content that is of BBFC 18R standard/strength."
Here is the parent company's channel list, which is basically freeview and a lot of local niche channels:- Link2
and here are the speeds that the parent company recommend:-
" GDBTV plays at different connection speeds. It is worth checking your line speed by going to the following link and running a simple line speed check: ADSLguide. You may find your connection speed is much lower than your internet provider is telling you. You really need a genuine line speed of 700kbps but for best results 1300kbps is preferred."
