Sky to offer missing channels via Tiscali ?

I heard this on the way into work this morning. Apparentley the channels recently lost during the negotiations maybe streamed via Tiscali's Broadband service

The deal is expected to be sealed soon and will see the Italian-owned Tiscali - owners of HomeChoice - serve up popular channels like Sky One, Sky Sports News and Sky News to their 1.48 million broadband customers.

Re: Sky to offer missing channels via Tiscali ?

Intresting, however in my expereince Tiscali are not a very good ISP. I would be surprised if they can get this running well.

Definately interesting, given that HomeChoice have never carried the Sky Basics up to now, and they've been going for some years...

I always thought homechoice was a bit of a joke? I mean I'd never heard of them till I joined here.

Re: Sky to offer missing channels via Tiscali ?

Surely this is more appropriate in "Other TV providers" rather than other ISPs as the article is, I assume, talking about Tiscali TV (the IPTV service previously known as HomeChoice) rather than making the channels available via the net.

I concur - IPTV, although using IP and therefore being Internet-based (and therefore accessible via an ISP) is more about TV than it is IP.

Re: Sky to offer missing channels via Tiscali ?

So why isn't this offered on Sky Broadband then?

There's a question for you.

There is Anytime via broadband, which is just the same as download a program when you want it, but this is full on IPTV and as far as im aware, not available on Sky Broadband.

Good point, well made - perhaps it part of the negotiating strategy with the bearded one?

Or, and this is me with my cynical hat on, perhaps if it goes wrong (due to lack of bandwidth, traffic shaping, congestion, call it what you will) the "responsibility" will be Tiscali's.

Re: Sky to offer missing channels via Tiscali ?

A desperate act, by two desperate parties me thinks.

Tiscali - hardly a rosey record for best ISP.

BSkyb - Needs to keep advertiser 'bean counters' happy by improving on its declining viewing figures.

Re: Sky to offer missing channels via Tiscali ?

Mick , that doesnt seem like a view someone like you would take knowing full well people need to look at the far bigger long term picture with these people.

if its true, someone came along and offered far more money for a service so they took it, why did they offer more money when VM dont carry it now, who knows?, perhaps it will relate to future news, PR reports, and perhaps give sky in this case, another advantage as tiscali may buy into Pipex and the Wireless licence.

remember sky do like the renting model its ingrained in their blood, although i suspect they will go after a licence at some point just to own it rather than rent as it becomes crutial for profits later.

its just another transport medium for sky or anyone else to put their content and services on later...., buy into pipex now and get the current uk wide WiMax licence, or wait until analogue switch-off and pay through the nose later...., its going to happen and you as a long term cable guy know it or should!.

I think it's a good point to raise. My gut feeling would be that Tiscali have offered a sum of money to Sky for supplying the channels in this manner but of course Sky can't pay themselves for the same privaledge.
