Just cancelled Sky.............
(Not sure if this is the right board)
..........and I'm really angry with them.
I phoned up a couple of weeks ago to ask for a deal on a Sky+ box - word on the street was you could get it free. They wouldn't budge an inch when I asked them for an offer. So, I got in touch with VM and made arrangements to have my box fitted on 27th of this month.
Phoned Sky this a.m., and told them I wanted to cancel. They fell over backwards to try to get me to stay. I think the chap would have cut his own throat if I'd asked him to.
The thing is, it would have been cheaper to stay with them, by £9.00 a month in fact.
I would have to change to BT for my phone though.
They are offering 3 for £36.00 inc Sky Sports (not sure if it's the whole Sky Sports package though). Plus the Sky+ box thrown in and no monthly charge. £11.00 for BT line rental.
I think it's more of a principal thing now though. I just hope I'm not cutting off my nose to spite my face.

Re: Just cancelled Sky.............
the thing is when you ring sky asking for a deal (and ntl) you initially speak to 'regular' customer service agents.
when you actually want to cancel you end up being transferred to the retentions department (aka customer relations) who have better deals and their job is to offer you incentives to stay - e.g. 3 months half price or a free box. these incentives are from a set list but they pick the ones best suited to your needs.

screw that! forget basing your judgement on principles/emotions - go for whoever gives you the best deal.
I have sky plus - it works and it's good. I'd recommend it - no comment re the virgin + box as I've no experience of it.
p.s. why do you think you have to change to BT for your phone? SKY should work with any normal phone line (excluding voip).

Re: Just cancelled Sky.............
I suspect you're referring to the Sky "free" broadband deal (2Mb with a 40GB cap if memory serves) - and yes, to get that you would.

Re: Just cancelled Sky.............
Update.........Have reinstated Sky and got the box offer on the TV only.
Never thought of that - just stay as we are!
Mind you, I was passed from pillar to post.
They are coming to change the box on Saturday for me.
Free box, no installation fee.
My tea is burnt, but OH is happy. He has still got his wrestling channel.

Re: Just cancelled Sky.............
If you did go for cable you say it would be 8 pounds more but did you include the Line Rental you need from BT? £11?

Re: Just cancelled Sky.............
1. For the whole Sky package, phone BB and tv, they are asking £36, and that includes Sky sports. BT would be an extra £11.00 on top of that. That makes £47.00.Sky+ is free
2. Cable is £30 for 3, plus £16.50 for Sports, plus £10 for V+ totalling £56.00
3. I'm staying with cable 2 for £20, phone and BB, and sticking with Sky TV - £37.00 inc sports. Sky+ is free. Total £56.00.
I don't want to change phone and BB, VM has unlimited downloads.
So I've got the + box, and my charges stay the same.

Re: Just cancelled Sky.............
I reckon you made the right choice. Look at it this way:
Sky want to charge extra for having the Sky+ box (which isn't HD) AND then a subscription to be able to use the thing (even though you got this waived).
Want Sky HD? That will be 300 pounds please (and if the box breaks down after 12 months you pay for repair as you OWN it) PLUS a further subscription again to use what you have paid for!!
Look at it this way. I used to have AOL for phone, line rental from BT, TV (XL) from Virgin and internet from BE (who were very very good, fast and reliable). When we lost Sky One I called and got a deal. ALL in, internet 10meg (soon going to 20), the same TV package - with Sky Movies which I didn't have b4, unlimited telephone and line rental for £60pcm - saving me £30 to what I was paying b4.
And just to confirm, yes I am getting constant 10meg, even wirelessly, all services up and running!
And to top it all I have found customer services to be great! All I want now is a free mobile sim card!!
