It was a good idea 10 years ago when the FCC first thought of the CableCard idea. There is a good artical on Wikipedia about CableCards. Today it doubles the cost of a basic stb.
Cable companies have enough problems getting there own PVR's to work. They are not going to support everybody else's PVR.
Look at the quality of freeview PVRs then add the new cable features like pay per view and IPTV.
