Have a go at Wolfbane's Digital TV reception predictor. It will tell you what sort of aerial you should have for Freeview.
http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tvd.exe?
I have to say though, unless you live right underneath your transmitter, Freeview signals are generally not strong enough for set-top aerials yet. This won't improve until they switch off the analogue and are able to increase digital transmitter power.

You say that, but I can get all channels on that Telecam, in NE Notts (NG4) off Belmont transmitter near Grimsby, fifty miles away, with the output split between the freeview box and my PC.

Re: Freeview indoor aerial
Should be OK. It's not transferred to the post very well though - the first part of the postcode should be enough for us to look ourselves.

Re: Freeview indoor aerial
LE4 would have sufficed. Yeah, you should be fine, Waltham is pretty close.

On the contrary, the predictor suggests an amplified extra high-gain aerial, so I would have thought based on that that the transmitter is operating at very low power and an indoor aerial would be out of the question.

Well Belmont's listed as distant here (NG4) and I can pick everything up.
Unless there's any terrain blocking it, which between Leicester and Waltham there isn't much, then distance should be no issue.
That aerial is only a tenner anyway.

Distance isn't the only consideration. You have to account for the power of the transmitter as well.
