So I rang NTL and the technical support guy told me that the modem should be fine, since I'm getting a 169 IP when the white cable is not connected.

He said the modem was still trying to lock onto the USB, so I need to leave it for a few hours for it to be able to lock onto my ethernet.

Does this sound feasible?
