The best place to get a LiVE kit, I'd recommend GAME (They did, or still do an offer of a half price LiVE kit with a full priced live enabled game). At present, you will need a credit card to register with Microsoft for the Live service.
With regards to 'cheating' on xbox live it maybe possible with a modded xbox but i believe Microsoft have or are updating the live service to weed out the 'cheaters'. Its not a big problem on LiVE and it won't spoil your fun when online.
There is a clan (as you can tell from my sig!) and we are always on the look out for new members! We play for fun first, winning is just a bonus!
