The fact that NTL cocked up your DD has nothing to do with the length of your contract with them, you are obliged to fulfil 12 months from your sign up date, after 11 months you can give them 30 days notice.
You are entitled to your money back as has been mentioned earlier, the cock up by NTL should not have any bearing on how long left you have of your original 12 month minimum term.
