Is Sky Broadband good for gaming?

After having horrendous issues with Virgins 30MB BB service for the past year (fluctuating pings and high latency while gaming) i am considering going to Sky.
Have been given a friends and family offer for Sky but can anyone who has experienced both Virgins and Skys BB tell me if in general the Sky service is better for gaming. I would be dropping from 30mb to 8-11mb HOWEVER speed isnt everything for me and im more interested in a stable line with little ping and non wildly fluctuating latency. All opinions welcome.

BTW i was considering the Unlimited Sky BB package.

Re: Is Sky Broadband good for gaming?

Be, and BT Infinity are better if you can get them. Sky is however one of the better ones on average.

I currently use it and receive around 9mb upto now I've had no issues with YT HD , Netflix HD , Iplayer HD and gaming has been generally good.

Can you post us a link to back up that claim , they have some oversubscribed exchanges which have been issued with fix dates , like any ISP they will at times suffer with contention , I'm more interested in how long it takes them to remedy these issues when they arise.

Re: Is Sky Broadband good for gaming?

I have had both...back and forth....and up to 50mb on virgin

For me, virgin has been poor, so much so that I have 11mb from sky (0.9 up) and have better gaming with that.

But that isn't same story for all...and i think I will try infinity when it hits my area

I only want decent multi player experience..i don't use broadband much for anything else except chat

And I don't stream video/tv much..have sky, and can't keep up with what I got

Re: Is Sky Broadband good for gaming?

Thanks for the replies. Checked with SamKnows and as i thought there is no Be or Bt Infinity. Went onto the BT site and it doesnt even mention when my exchange is due to get Infinity.

My choices are either to stay with Virgin or go to Sky. Only other provider available is Talk Talk which i wouldnt entertain.

Im really wanting to try Sky due to the issues with Virgins BB but im wondering if its better the devil you know kinda thing. I dont currently have a telephone line in this house apart from Virgin so Sky would also be installing the line. Will mull over it for the next few days i think.

Think im just wanting someone to convince me to go for Sky

Appreciate the opinions.

Re: Is Sky Broadband good for gaming?

I have no issues with my Sky BB Unlimited connection. Just make sure you *can* get Sky BB Unlimited... if all that is available is Sky BB Connect then steer clear!

34 exchanges out of 1,949, a total of 7 backhaul links. Must be some definition of 'most areas' I haven't seen before.

Re: Is Sky Broadband good for gaming?

Phoned Sky this morning. Seem to be going round in circles. Not a good start

Does anyone on here know if Sky ALWAYS use independant installers now to install into a block of flats? I live in a maisonette and its not a communal dish. Im only one up but Sky insist that i have to go through a company called Campbell and Kennedy as Sky themselves dont install to flats anymore.

Have read MANY horror stories in regards to C+K so if this is the case then i think i'll just stick with Virgin
