No cable in new house - don't know what to do!
Hi,
I'm currently with Virgin and have got V+ XL, XL broadband (and get consistent speeds of almost 10mb) and phone with some addons. I pay about £60 a month.
I'm moving into a new build and Virgin say there is no cable there so can only supply me with ADSL broadband but no TV.
So i thought the best option would be to just go with Sky.... Problem is they are estimating a maximum of 3MB speed for my postcode Can you tell me if this is actually my only option, can't i get it any faster? BT said the same thing. Not sure who else there is?
So if i went with Sky it'd cost me £55 a month for a similar package but with a crap download speed and i don't know how much the phone addons would be. I can't work out whether to stay with Virgin for phone/BB and just get telly with Sky?
I would be happy to go Freeview but i would like to record/rewind live TV and i want the kids Nickelodeon channels too.

Did you check when Infinity will be available in your area?

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial check on your postcode indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 1Mbps. However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.
Our initial check on your postcode indicates that your line may not support a reliable ADSL Max broadband service, with current technology. However, an order for 250Kbps broadband speed will still be accepted, but an engineer may need to visit who will, where possible, supply the service.
If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the service you wish to purchase.

Am i right in thinking i should be signing up to a BT phone line first of all, because i'm looking at all the ADSL providers and they require one i think?

Re: No cable in new house - don't know what to do!
I dont think you need a BT line if you're in Sky's network, just take Sky line rental (someone correct if wrong) i think you only need a BT line if you're outside of Sky's network.
I think the best option for you would be to call Sky up and take services from them as you cant get TV from VM anyway

Do you know what will happen to my ntlworld email address when i leave Virgin, can i keep it?

Take the BT line rental which is £10 per month (if paid upfront for £120) and then take up whatever orange is offering you such as their talk package or broadband.

Re: No cable in new house - don't know what to do!
256k-1mbps? Wow. That's some seriously bad line you got there. You might be better off with a mobile broadband connection (those go up to 20mbps these days but average about 3-5mbps, much higher than the max BT estimate over your phone line).
Though if you've got line of sight to any mate's homes who have fast(er) internet you'd be just as well setting up a wireless bridge.

You will need to open a Gmail email account or similar because your NTL email will close shortly after your account closes.

I would open a gmail (or similar) account regardless. If you take an ISP account you'll face the same problem when you move ISP. There really is no point in having an email address tied to an ISP.

Re: No cable in new house - don't know what to do!
Right i've done loads of comparisons and i think i'm just going to go for the easy option... Sky+HD, with BB and phone for £55 a month. (with £116 cashback + £50 M&S voucher)
Bit gutted about my ntlworld email though, i do have other email addys but use my ntlworld for anything "formal" and have applied for jobs recently that will have it. Bah never mind. Does anyone know what the Sky email addresses are? @sky.com??

Funny you should say that, i just read this here
Sky Email equals life email. If you cancel your subscription to Sky Broadband or Sky TV you will still be able to keep your Sky Email address. Life email guaranteed.
As long as you continue to use the account, we'll keep it active. It's that simple.

BT and Sky sites said between 1 and 4 mbps, not sure what to believe!
I'm wondering if Virgin ADSL would be any faster or is it all the same?

Any ADSL connection will require a BT line and the connection will be no faster if you go with orange or sky or any other provider .It's the quality of the line supplying your house that is the issue ,i have the same problem untill infinity comes to the area
