BT announce FTTP 300Mbit broadband
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tech/new...in-the-uk.html
Quote:
BT said that the technology has the potential to "transform the UK broadband landscape", as it would enable speeds of up 300Mpbs to be made available "anywhere in BT's fibre footprint where a customer requires it".
The company feels that the top speed would most likely suit medium-sized businesses needing to send large amounts of data, while local authorities could also benefit. There has been no indication as yet how much the service will cost, but it is likely to be high.

re: BT announce FTTP 300Mbit broadband
Is this FTTC or FTTP for the 300Mbs? I'm sure it's FTTP and if so I'll change the title which is incorrect

re: BT announce FTTP 300Mbit broadband
It says that it could be used for FTTC areas to have a FTTP run "on demand" ...

Oh, damn, if you could change the title.
It's FTTP

Re: BT announce FTTP 300Mbit broadband
Since my original cable company said to me over 20 years ago that "we're installing fibre to your home" (I was a little surprised at what I actually got...) I have been waiting for a fibre service.
Yes, the initial costs are prohibitive, but once small business' pay for fibre to be strung along shopping areas, industrial estates etc, I am sure residential users will eventually be able to "piggy back" off these lines and just pay for the fibre to go down their own road.
Very good news indeed.

Erm, as I read it the proposal is for the small business to pay for the fibre to be taken from the existing FTTC infrastructure, and there to the property. I would assume it won't benefit any of the neighbouring address as it'll be a point to point install

Re: BT announce FTTP 300Mbit broadband
I read exactly the same as you.
The reason why no company does FTTH is cost. BT are prediciting, correctly I believe, that business' will want to pay for the fibre lines from their street cabinets to their premises. I am sure somewhere hidden in these plans there must be a way for residential users to piggy back off these lines. I don't know how, when, what, but why would BT bother if it were not possible somehow?

Because people will be covering the cost of doing it themselves?
I thought the way it works with FTTC is that BT move the broadband kit from the exchange to the cabinet, but from the cabinets it's still a single connection to each address
FTTP takes the existing FTTC struture and then just replaces the 'last mile' of copper with fibre optic. So to connect 10 properties as FTTP you'd need 10 fibre runs, same as you have 10 metal cables now
It's not built in the same way as cable where a single cable can be shared by or split to serve multiple broadband users
(If I've got any of that wrong, happy to be corrected)

I kind of wondered that if a company wants FTTP and the area to be dug passes residential it would make sense to offer the residential customer the option for a fee , whether that could happen is another thing though I suppose.

Well, that's ignoring the possibility of fibre to the basement, or similar solutions which other companies have succesfully deployed already.
I can certainly foresee grabbing a 300mbit fibre run and reselling it between 6 homes at 100mbps each, which'll still be higher than they get from FTTC. Depending on how contended the original fibre link is you could even push it to 10-20 properties in all likelyhood.

Re: BT announce FTTP 300Mbit broadband
Does make you wonder why VM doesn't go the same route.. They already have the conduits and existing cable and regularly do repulls, so why not repull with FTTP..

Because with Virgin the fibre is to the Node and not the cabinet, and the repulls are from the cabinet to the property
(happy to be corrected if I'm wrong)

Tis the case in our building and probably the case at many buildings which serve offices and businesses. There's a termination block in one corner which is fed by one or two cabinets. That block is then distributed carefully through the building via CAT5 or similar to BT sockets.
There is one problem - VDSL2 has a theoretical maximum of 250Mbps, degrading quickly to 100Mbps where it then goes slower depending on loop loss. Where's this 300Mbps speed going to come from?
