I'm using a 9mb Sky ADSL line which streams iplayer/Netflix HD with ease , granted big downloads are made a lot easier with faster BB however I'm glad to see BT and other companies expanding their fibre footprint and will probably consider Sky's 40mb product when available to me , I can't see myself needing any quicker for the foreseeable future. I will remain an ADSL customer until fibre is available in my area.

Yes, as I'm sure you'll know pushing fibre further and further into the HFC network ("fibre deep") is an ongoing goal of many cable networks. Although the difference in network architectures would prevent VM from doing it in the same way as BT, in some ways it may be easier for VM.
While some of us might be more interested in Gb+ wireless ubiquity at the moment ('5G') one can't deny the gold standard for speed and capacity is optical fibre and ideally (and maybe even at some point in my lifetime) it'd be everywhere.

Some estimate the cost of "fibre on demand" installation to be around £500 to £1500. As a one-off cost to pull gigabit fibre into my home (while I bet VM will still be struggling with 120mbps) I'd happily pay that.
VM's competition is really upping the ante.

Re: BT announce FTTP 300Mbit broadband
Some information below on installing this product not sure if it has already been posted further up the thread, they mention using ducting so surely they would need to dig up the road plus whatever ducting is being used in this instance appears to be rather small so probably not everyone would be able to get this product.
Now this is in Milton Keynes so it may well use other ducting already in place.

I thought i read somewhere that they might do it overland, not necessarily digging up, as well as using existing ducts

Major trip hazard and would probably lead to many ambulance chaser claims, plus vandalism could become an issue.

Couldn't they do it similar to BT phone lines? Never heard of anyone tripping over them...though i guess it may only affect the birds

They did I believe using poles , however I could be wrong there. Still good news whatever I'll be happy with a reliable 40mb product that streams YT and allows you to game hassle free.

Yes, I want quicker speed for gaming...and virgin is pointless, tried had, 10, 30mb, and even 50..gaming was same as my circa 11mb with sky

I believe Verizon delivers FiOS via telephone poles in parts of the US.

Re: BT announce FTTP 300Mbit broadband
There's a reason the BT access network agreement is called "poles and ducts", I'll leave you to guess why
---------- Post added at 13:48 ---------- Previous post was at 13:47 ----------
But honestly, seven hours? Aint bad. Takes that long for us to move fibre around our server rooms sometimes, not to mention twice as long to fix a broken fibre when there's a train involved.
For 7 hours times two engineers plus kit, the £500 to £1500 installation figure seems to be in the right ballpark. I'd still take it.
Though a few notes to add
a) That's a FTTP trial, being FTTP with fibre from the exchange, it's obviously going to take longer and cost more than just installing fibre from the cabinet
b) That's a FTTP trial, being a trial they're not likely to be making any money out of it, so cost effectiveness is an issue, with FoD it costs BT nothing so there's no question of cost effectiveness.
c) Installing 10 fibres to the same premises at the same time, say in heavily built-up areas which Milton Keynes is not - is going to save a lot in costs.
And since the article's nearly a year old, it's worth mentioning sentences like "And it's important to note that customers will not be able to choose how fibre is delivered to their home or business. Depending on the infrastructure, they will either get fibre-to-the-premises or fibre-to-the-cabinet." - are now completely incorrect.

Re: BT announce FTTP 300Mbit broadband
Maybe Virgin should now install FTTP in responce to BT Infinity, they are in a better position than BT to do it!

There is one problem - VDSL2 has a theoretical maximum of 250Mbps, degrading quickly to 100Mbps where it then goes slower depending on loop loss. Where's this 300Mbps speed going to come from?

Yes, because speed doesn't change latency and packet loss, although fibre to the premises may help a bit with latency. Virgin have gone the route of quantity over quality with great headline speeds over saturated links. Hopefully BT won't take the same route but I suspect they will, the government has put in average speed targets with absolutely no provision for connection quality so the ISP puts all all their resources into maximum throughout without the backend to support many people using it at the same time.

Can I ask in what way are VM in a better position than BT to do it?
