No, back on topic. I wouldn't say the top speed of a single link defines the "size" of a particular network, nor the physical reach or total capacity. In fact it's quite hard to quantify the "size" of any network outside of any individual attribute.
Nevertheless, Chrys, I don't think 100gbps has anything to do with "total capacity" - especially when you can get switches these days with several
terabits per second of total switching capacity. Total capacity of any given network - VMs or Sky or anyone else - is exceedingly hard to quantify, and for the most part, totally irrelevant.
I think capacity to and from "the internet", i.e.
off of the ISPs own network is the key factor, and as you've mentioned VM does fall flat in some areas with regards to this. Core network capacity means nothing if you can't data onto or off that core fast enough, it's like having a 40-lane motorway with only one entry/exit lane.
