I'm sure it will happen eventually but the cynic in me does wonder if this is some sort of attempt to make people hold fire with Sky and not move to VM or BT Infinity for broadband, because they know they can't compete for speed.

Re: Sky Broadband - Fibre optic trial ?
My problem is that my exchange isn't upgraded for Fibre , and there's no date announced , I've had VM and that was ok at first but gradually deteriorated into an oversubscribed nightmare.

I do have the choice of BT Infinity here but I like one bill and don't rate BT Vision so I went for VM.
As far as the broadband goes it's only been 2 weeks but the closest I have got to the 30MB I pay for is 26MB. Most of the time it is around the 10 - 15MB mark.
Needless to say, if VM think I am going to continually pay for a speed they can't deliver they have another thing coming...

I'm generally happy with my Sky TV service , if this trial was to materialise and end up as a product I'd be even happier once my Exchange is upgraded

Whilst on the phone a few weeks back to Sky tech support, I asked the question about when would they be trialling their fibre to the cabinet and the only response I got was that trials with staff member's were on going and the result's were pretty good, so take from this what you will.
Also Ignition muted that it may be second quarter of next year before they roll it out, so I think I'm gonna stay put for now and see what unfold's

Think Sky LLU, not Connect. They aren't using the BT Wholesale network which Connect uses but their own LLU network to backhaul.

Re: Sky Broadband - Fibre optic trial ?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't sky use BT phone lines?
So I presume you will only be able to get Sky via fibre optic cable if BT have installed them in your area.

Re: Sky Broadband - Fibre optic trial ?
Isn't it FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet)?

Yes but thanks to VM anything that has fibre in the local loop anywhere can be called 'fibre optic'.

No...
It's public knowledge that SKY have delivered a substantial FTTP build early this year. (although they have never shouted about it), they could roll it out if they wanted to.. big expense though.
I think there could be a lot of collaborations around the corner.

Re: Sky Broadband - Fibre optic trial ?
BT is not going to make it easy for rivals to use its fibre and Virgin Media certainly isn't going to open up its network.
Therefore, you will not see a fibre optic service apart from BT and Virgin Media as well as Smallworld Media at this time.
The reason for this is, BT want to gain as much custom as possible and not give the rivals such as Sky successful start.
If BT was clever, they would start promoting fibre optic broadband through Plusnet, an ISP wholly owned by BT.
