BT Infinity & P2P
So i signed up to BT Infinity Option 2 today which is 40Mb down 10Mb up, with unlimited usage, but what i want to know is, how is it for P2P and how do they throttle it?
So it says:
and apply speed restrictions to all P2P traffic. We manage these restrictions daily based on the demands on the network, but downstream restrictions will typically be in place 4pm - midnight on weekdays and 9am - midnight on the weekend. Upstream restrictions may be in place at other times.
So do they limit P2P traffic during these times no matter what, or is it like VM where you need to download/upload a certain amount during those times before the traffic management policy kicks in, as i could not find much info on this subject.
thanks

Just as with VM BT limit P2P during the appropriate period regardless of how much you use.
The throttling can be vicious but depends on how busy the network is.
That said however they don't shape newsgroups, so fill your boots with that.

VM don't throttle P2P traffic, unless you download a certain amount, and they don't really throttle 50Mb (only upload during evening periods), not sure about 100Mb

So it does appear BT throttle P2P traffic during those times, no matter what.

VM throttle P2P traffic per http://help.virginmedia.com/system/s...MER_TYPE=Cable

File Sharing:
We also moderate the total volume of file sharing traffic on our network between 5pm and midnight on weekdays and midday and midnight on weekends. This policy, which applies to all broadband packages, is restricted to Peer to Peer (“P2P”) applications and Newsgroups (which are commonly used to distribute large amounts of data)

The only reason i signed up to infinity was i already had a sky broadband line but with BT line rental. BT called up and offering unlimited calling package plus infinity option 2 for £14.90 for 9 months, than £39.40 for the remaining months of the 18 month contract. I thought it was a good deal and would save me a lot more money compared to sky talk, broadband, tv (which no one uses) plus the BT line rental.

Does not mean it does not happen, The level it is throttled too depends on how much everybody else is using. It also becomes more noticeable with higher speeds.

See the link, that is from VM's own website. You may not have noticed it but it's there in black and white. Given VM throttle on a per-connection basis it's quite possible that you're avoiding the worst of it through having many connections running simultaneously via P2P.
Either way VM do shape, to be more exact they tag P2P traffic on their core network then do standard quality of service at the uBR / CMTS deprioritising the P2P.
