The dark side is looking a little more welcoming now.

One answer to that James and that is NEVER.

In a future where wireless is more the norm than wired, could Sky use its wireless portfolio to literally leapfrog over the ancient copper and physical constraints of BT’s infrastructure? Could the company replace your BT line altogether with a simple username and password to tap you into a Cloud hotspot on every street corner?
Is that possible ?

Re: Sky Broadband upgrades core network to 100Gbps

Yes, some devices can do it now (using people/companies open WiFi). I believe the mobile companies in the US want(ed) to do something similar but decided against it for some reason.

When they roll out FTTC, which I hope they do, that'll be a great investment and we'll finally be able to do things like HD streaming!

Given that the FTTC network access, whilst pricey, is available to other ISP's, I'd be very surprised if this isn't made available at some point.

That said, you can stream HD at 10Mbps anyway, so it's possible on ADSL quite easily depending on your connection.

The really interesting question is whether 4G will completely trump all but the fastest fibre services in the near future.

Re: Sky Broadband upgrades core network to 100Gbps

I'd be interested to hear Ignitionets view on how Sky will proceed with next gen Broadband and what this all means , he seems to be knowledgable on anything network related.

Re: Sky Broadband upgrades core network to 100Gbps

These upgrades along with upgrade of the remaining 100Mbit backhauled exchanges to 1Gbps and some 1Gbps backhaul exchanges to 10Gbps are both to cope with increased usage and customer numbers and are preparation for a foray into buying VULA FTTC from BT Openreach and backhauling it along the Sky LLU network.

I believe that 2nd quarter of 2012 is being targeted for a nationwide release, obviously no idea about specifics like whether they'll be using the full 80Mb/20Mb product or how much the product will cost but I would expect a bit of a cost bump compared to the current product.

The maths changes a bit going from connections which average around 10Mb/s to ones which will be >40Mb/s.

Incidentally due to how Openreach sell the products this also means that Sky will be able to offer the 300Mb FTTP product also via the same GEA network interface with BT Openreach.

Re: Sky Broadband upgrades core network to 100Gbps

Thanks for that info , very interesting. A quick question , when BT upgrade exchanges for FTTC do they generally do an area then move to the next exchange nearest , an exchange roughly 4 miles from us has a date this month but nothing for ours.

Re: Sky Broadband upgrades core network to 100Gbps

I know for individual cabs BT have return on investment targets. So if they think a cab won't hit that they don't bother getting fibre to it.

No - they have limited resources in each region.
