Re: BT sees off its Broadband rivals with 6m customers

Re: BT sees off its Broadband rivals with 6m customers
Well the would be little point in me going with BT around here unless I was happy to put up with sub 2Mb broadband speeds especially as I get 32Mb with my Virgin Media broadband connection.
I expect it all comes down to whether you are happy to downgrade to a substandard service offering virtually dialup speeds.
Even when I finally lose my job due to my centre closing I would never take the retrograde step of getting BT installed at my property.

And you can add me to the list of people who will never go to BT.

The 'progression', and I use the term extremely loosely, of this thread was pretty predictable

The surprise being is that people on the likes of my estate will put up with such slow speeds when then can get much better for similar prices.

If the statistics were for your estate alone I'd agree, though they are of course nationwide where the picture is somewhat different

Indeed - without BT releasing 40Mb down and 10Mb up VM are unlikely to have adjusted their own upload ratios to 10:1 nor released a 100Mb product, and VM are unlikely to be doing what they are next year without BT releasing an 80Mb down 20Mb up product.

I doubt many BT only estates get the advertised speeds down a phone line and many estates will be like mine at the far reaches of the network getting very slow speeds, so I would in all likelihood need to move house next to an exchange to get anything near to what I presently get which is 32Mb.
I also rather doubt the average subscriber to the BT network lives within a reasonable distance from their local exchange so they will not get speeds anywhere near what they are paying for.

The plans for next year are looking good.

I have to use a BT connection as there is no VM but i did use NTL/VM for 7 years in my old house .The connection is much slower (5-6mb on a good day) but is much more stable and even using sky as my provider won't increase the speed as it's still a BT line serving me and i'm sure this is the case in many parts of the country so effectively BT still have a monopoly in non cabled areas

Except not everyone takes their service from the exchange.

Given they haven't been announced within the company officially you certainly will be quite impressed, although the new traffic management will be interesting and may well not be to everyone's taste, especially on the top products.

Still not worth a balloon but each to their own.
