BT at war with my council over fibre

Some from leics may have seen on east mid news that leics city council have decided to fund a fibre rollout to inner city areas. They didnt say how extensive the rollout is but was mentioned in areas where BT coverage is of poor quality. They were in negotiations with BT for a number of months to subsidise BT but BT kept saying not viable.

Within 4 weeks of the council giving the go ahead of its own plans BT said they doing their own FTTC/P rollout in the same area (suddenly its viable), the council reacted by saying they will reject any planning permission as BT wouldnt cooperate before.

Re: BT at war with my council over fibre

Unfortunately the council can't do anything about it anywhere apart from conservation areas and if they block BT out of spite they will be reviewed and found wanting.

Fun to watch though for sure.

Would be interesting to see what was actually said. Difficult to believe councils 100% as they have an electorate to win over and I doubt that Leicester et al weren't on the list somewhere along the line, and even more I doubt that BT would have turned down subsidies given the areas they are enabling with subsidy, areas which are far more remote and unviable.

What are your sources for this info Chris? Google is totally blank on these matters, both standard and news search, the only info about Leicester fibre it gives discusses BT's enabling of some less urban bits of Leicestershire along with some more urban bits. No announcements anywhere about BT deploying fibre in Leicester.
