Activating a BT extension socket (with pics)
Hi, apologies if this posted in the wrong area!
My apartment has 2 bt phone sockets. The master one is in the bedroom and the extension is in the living room (for some weird reason).
Basically i know the extension socket doesnt work as i have plugged the phone and Netgear router in it and there is no signal. I was just wondering if it is possible to wire the master so this extension socket becomes live?
Please see pictures below of the extensions wiring and the master socket.
Thanks for any help in advance.

Re: Activating a BT extension socket (with pics)
You shouldn't be disturbing any of the wiring connected to the back of the master socket. That is only for BT to disturb.
Wiring for the customer's extensions should be connected to the removable "master socket back" plate you show in the second photo.
I suspect from the top photo that the extension wire is the series of loose strands in the top right corner. They can be pushed into the punch down clips on the socket back of photo 2. The challenge will be getting them in the right order. Sommetimes there might be numbering to assist. Most telecoms will not need all three of the pairs in the extension wire, and indeed it looks like only three strands have been used on the extension.
You will need an ADSL filter plugged into the phone socket wherever you plug in a phone or ADSL modem. ADSL modems can be more reliable when connected to the master socket.

Re: Activating a BT extension socket (with pics)
Thanks for the reply Rob. I think the wires for the extension socket might be on the left as they are coming from a different source (you cant see this clearly on the pic)
I have been told that i need to connect the blue/white to 2, the white/blue to 5 and the orange to 3 on the back of the master socket?
Main reason i want to do this is because the wireless signal on the ADSL router is poor because its quite far from the living room where the PC is, so i really need the connection on ethernet direct.

You should only be connecting your wires to the removable master socket back, not the master socket, based on your photo. Connection to the master socket itself is only for the incoming wiring from the BT network.

Yes Rob, sorry i did mean connect the 3 wires to the master socket back plate on picture 2, not the master itself!
Thanks for the advice, appreciate it.

Re: Activating a BT extension socket (with pics)
you only need 2 and 5, especially if you're planning on hooking ADSL into the extension socket. Wire 3 is the old ring wire, and if you connect it then your adsl speed may be lower than without it connected.

Re: Activating a BT extension socket (with pics)
So i just connect the blue/white wire to 2 and the white blue wire to 5. and thats it?
I need an IDC tool, when i have one you dont need to strip the cable down right? Just push it in with the IDC tool and thats it?

If you are careful you might be able to apply enough pressure to the wire with a screwdriver or similar flat blade. The wire will strip itself if pressed home properly.

Re: Activating a BT extension socket (with pics)
Hang on, which wire is which, as if those connectors are in a line - 5 4 3 2, then the orange is 5, the Blue+ white is the ringer wire on 3, and the white+blue is the other line wire. The standard would place the orange on 3, but then, it's possible that the extension is not wired according to standard.
And yes, for ADSL it is better not to connect the ringer wire on extensions, as the filters provide the ringer capacitors and leaving the ringer wire connected tends to unbalance the ADSL signal and lower the possible speed.
