astraweb downloading max at 1.2 MB/s

Hi all,

My cable service has a download speed of abt 20-25mbps (tested from speedtest.net) but when i'm using Grabit to download files (ussually large files), the mas downloading speed is only about 1.2 MB/s. I'm using Astraweb as the provider.

Does any one have any idea why I dont get my max download speed or even close?

is there such thing as capping hours from astraweb?

Check out post 6 of this thread and change your SSL port to 443.

Yep SSL is the way to go, If they close that then you might be looking at VPN as well.

That is the problem then can you not change to the SSL server? If your plan doesn't allow it then maybe change as it only costs $11 a month on the special offer.

http://www.news.astraweb.com/specials/kleverig-11.html

In fact i believe all plans use the SSL now so you really should use the secure server.

Re: astraweb downloading max at 1.2 MB/s

I thought astraweb included SSL on all their plans.

I believe the servers are

ssl.astraweb.com
ssl-eu.astraweb.com

Unless they've changed them again.

Also might be worth looking at sab depending on what kind of "news" you are after. (It's a newsreader, not an alternate provider)

Depends what he's downloading with, the older grabit versions didn't support it.

Also if he was using something like a nettop/netbook he might find it runs out of steam trying to do SSL before he runs out of bandwidth.

Re: astraweb downloading max at 1.2 MB/s

Hey guys,
Using SSL seems to slow down the speed a bit for me. That's the reason why Im not using the SSl server. It 's around ~1.2 MB/s with the SSl server.
I also tried with sab. it's the same thing.

i was able to download at ~ 1.8 MB/s using the normal IE downloader.

Re: astraweb downloading max at 1.2 MB/s

TBH, I used Astraweb for a long time. I found that I was able to max out my connection (about 1.5MBps) for the relatively new stuff, but for anything older, the service would slow to a crawl randomly.

Supernews does not suffer the same problem, offering me max speeds for any download.

I'd suspect that the less popular content is only stored on a handful of servers.
Still for $11 can't complain to much.
