This is good, but you would think in this day and age even these areas would have a half decent internet connection.

Not really when you take into consideration how much that would actually cost.

It would bankrupt any company that tried it due to the exorbitant costs involved so no company will ever try to do something on this scale.

Even the 10s of Millions blown in bonuses paid by BT (and ignoring that the bulk of the people who earned those bonuses probably bought in ten times their bonus in profits), would not cover the cost of putting fibre to the whole country..

Re: UK village builds own fibre to the home

hey guys.
im an installer working for fibrecity in bournemouth and we are in the process of rolling out 100mbps broadband/tv and phone to residential homes in bournemouth. we are capable of boosting the broadband up to 1gbps for an hour a time 10 times a month on certain ISP's packages. the work involves digging up 7500 roads and making the services available for 90,000 homes in bournemouth.

And that's just one little town. The total cost of just the roadworks must be staggering.

Still, I think Bournemouth must now be on my list of places for retirement.

Re: UK village builds own fibre to the home

they reckon all the civils work will be done in 2 years from start to finish. theyve been doing it for a year already. when the first plans to do the work were laid out, it was agreed that all the cables would be run through the water sewers which would cut down on cost. now wessex water have pulled out of this agreement for bournemouth so the cost has rocketed as all streets now have to be dug. aparently tho, the other water authorities have agreed to let the fibres being run through the sewers for the next fibrecities

Re: UK village builds own fibre to the home

Let's hope your contractors do a better job than the Diamond Cable guys working in Lincoln. They had a nifty little machine that ploughed along the footpaths making a neat little trench. Unfortunately they also ploughed through water and gas pipes on a regular basis.

Almost had a stand-up fight one day between the cable guys and the gas repair team until a load of supervisor types in suits turned up to calm things down.
