Im thinking of changing all services over to Sky very soon to save some money, and i'll be getting their 20Mb service. does anyone know roughly what speed i could expect?

Assuming there's nothing unusual going on you are likely to get the full 20Mb.

Yep depending on line conditions you should get a decent speed, if possible do NOT take Sky line rental as their SVBN setup is not very good and you will get better line speeds keeping BT line rental. Other than that you shouldn't have problems as long as you are on LLU and not Sky Connect which is sh........... rubbish.

I`ll second what Paul says about Sky Connect!

Normally after 5.00pm it drops even lower, sometimes lower than dial up.

ok great. so how do i go about doing this as i have phone with TalkTalk and line rental is from them also. so i need to call BT to get line rental from them?

Id rather go with a bt/o2 broadband combo than skytalk/skybb

im looking to save money to be honest, and i tried Virgin as we have broadband with Virgin but it is more expensive for less then if i go with Sky.

But im still confused about how to get line rental only from BT? and if i take line rental with Sky, why do i need a BT line? this is quite confusing.

You do not want to have sky line rental mate, do not let them control the line as you will go on their SVBN setup and people are having issues with it. Go to BT for the line if you have a choice, if you want to take sky for calls then you will have to get them to do the installation and line rental too or you will be contracted to BT for line and calls for a set period I think.
You can have BT line rental but pay sky for calls only, that's often the better option.

thanks. but what im confused about is how do i get just BT line rental and sky for calls?

do i call up BT and tell them i want only their line rental and then sign up to Sky.

Like people have said Sky connect is appauling and I have a first hand experience of it.

But Even with the 20mb Max etc, Id still expect awful throttling day to day 5pm-12am and rubbish speeds through them times.

If you do take the plunge for Sky BB Max

Pre- Advice

They will provide you with a Sagem Wireless Router no doubt and its utter crap, a cheap bit of plastic that has more chance of getting a signal off your tv remote.

Dont use wireless and use Ethernet if possible, If not use a patch cable.

Sorry if I sound like im just sounding Sky out but this is all from my experience, Not saying everyone else has the same experience but I went through Connect>Max.. the lot and all were awful to be fair.

Excellent TV service though

Hrm. You don't sound like a Sky Hater, just someone who is tarring the LLU products with the same brush as the Connect product.

You say at the start you have first hand experience of Sky Connect but to expect throttling on the Max implying you've no experience then in the 2nd to last paragraph you claim to have experience of the Max product as well so you're contradicting yourself in your post.

There is no throttling or congestion on the Sky 20Mbps products at all. Only Sky Connect, which is dire, suffers from all of this and is best avoided. If you had used the Max product you'd know there's no throttling.

The Sagem router is fine, it's a router with wireless, it is no worse than any other ISP's free router. I used a much earlier model of it, wireless range was much of muchness.

I haven't seen a home router you can plug a patch cable into and use without it being possible to use Ethernet. When you plug a patch cable into a home router Ethernet is what the cable is carrying as far as I'm aware.

Simply your advice isn't in any way applicable to Sky Max, which apparently is number one in terms of stability of the speeds it provides - pretty tough to do if there's all this throttling and congestion at peak times.

Sky's LLU / Max service is by all accounts throttling and congestion free and a pretty decent product.

Why dont you just call TalkTalk and ask for a MAC Code and then give it to Sky when you sign up, but think carefully do you really want there broadband

I only pay Sky £7.50 per month for Sky Broadband Unlimited, and have no usage limit, no FUP, & no throttling/shaping/management

Only issue is that I can't get more than around 7Mbps, however that is nothing to do with Sky, & everything to do with the length & quality of my line.

Ok, but If he pays his line rental to TalkTalk and wants to move to Sky line rental, does he really need to have to go through BT? Because when you pay line rental to say Sky or TalkTalk they take over the line including the number,thus when someone wants to switch from Sky Talk to Virgin Cable phone and want to take there number with them which is originally allocated to BT, Sky can block this process or be in charge porting.

He doesn't have to go through BT but to be honest I wouldn't go to Sky for everything until they sort out the mess they have made with the SVBN, there are a number of people who have lost speed due to increased attenuation when moved onto Skys' hardware.
