Re: Sky Broadband
You still have a bit left there with that Attenuation, plus the Noise Margin they aim for when DLM has finished is 6.9-7 db. Should be good for >10Mb.
When DLM has finished you can allways give em a ring and ask them to manually configure your line.
Just one thing, make sure you put a filter on all appliances connected. i.e. if you have a phone plugged into a different socket stick a filter in between. They don`t make this clear in the manual but i managed to get an extra 2.5Mb download by putting a filter between our upstairs socket and the phone.

Re: Sky Broadband
So its been about 12 days and here are the results
ADSL Link
Downstream
Upstream Connection 796 kbps Line
Speed 10237 kbps
Attenuation 28.5db 16.1db
Noise Margin 5.1db 8.5db
This is good i guess, i was worried it'd be around 3-6Mb, but do you think i could get more?
---------- Post added at 01:21 ---------- Previous post was at 01:01 ----------
I just rebooted my router as the noise margin was below 6.5db its now at around 7.8db but my downstream changed from 10237 kbps to 9360 kbps....
why? anyway to get this a bit faster, im sure im able to get a bit faster right?

Re: Sky Broadband
You could get over 16Mbps with that downstream attenuation... if it wasn't for your noise margin.
http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/route...explained.html
How is the router connected? Via an extension, or direct to the BT master?
Do you have a modern BT NTE5 master socket, with a split front?
Have a read of these:
http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/view-master.html
http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php?type=html
... and try the hidden test socket, behind the faceplate.
If that improves your speed / noise margin, then you need to have a look at your wiring, & consider removing the ring wire, or fitting a BT I-Plate, or fitting a filtered faceplate.

Re: Sky Broadband
Read the first link in my post.
Your noise margin is holding you back, plus it fluctuates anyway.
When you managed to get a downstream sync speed of 10237kbps, your noise margin was better (EDIT at the time of connection, obviously 5.1dB is not "better"... it dropped to that after connecting).
When you rebooted, the router aimed for the best speed it could get with a given noise margin, and as the noise is that little bit worse now the speed is that little bit worse. If you rebooted again at a time of lower noise (higher noise margin), you'd get more speed.
You need to have a look at reducing the noise on your line.

Re: Sky Broadband
thanks for your post. i think i have a BT NTE5 as there is a test socket inside. it is connected directly to the filter which is connected to the phone socket, no extra extensions.
i did try putting it in the test socket, the upload went up to 800 kbps but nothing else changed. i will try the other stuff tomorrow.

Re: Sky Broadband
No problem.
I managed to squeeze another couple of meg out of my connection when I got it, simply by removing the ring wire. After that, I sorted things properly & fitted a filtered faceplate. Still only get 6Mbps though due to my lousy attentuation.

Re: Sky Broadband
I opened it and there is a red wire connected to number 3 but nothing connected to number 2, 4 or 5. There is no number 6 as stated in that link.
I do a a blue and blue/white wire a white and a green one right at the back but i dont know where they are connected, i think to a main fat white wire.

Re: Sky Broadband
if you have no extensions then nothing needs to connect to the plate that comes away from the main socket piece.

Re: Sky Broadband
Check with the other side and see if they confirm but for starters that orange wire may need to go, are there extensions on the line or is it just this socket? Bit weird that the orange wire is attached to the faceplate like that if BT installed this socket.
It may be worth very gently and very carefully seeing if you can take the plate off the wall completely to take a photo of the wiring on the back of the main socket itself, do not do this if not confident or if you think the wiring will pull.

Re: Sky Broadband
Post them up on Skyuser too, Brian is good with wiring. That orange wire has to go though for sure.
