Re: Sky Broadband
If you have the sagem the router is disapointing but the netgears are ok and they have a new router out now too. Wireless, have you changed the channel on the router? If it's the sagem it will be in auto which is completely useless. If you have just joined Sky you are on DLM and the line speed will change. Without router stats no one should be advising anything to you as it may be you are in line training, not set up properly or just seeing wireless interference.
If you have your BT router still you could piggy back it off the sky router, no one says you cannot use an access point to distribute the wireless signal.
If you are on Connect..... cancel now.

Re: Sky Broadband
Not sure what the package is called. It is TV/BB/Phone together with the highest BB offered. I tested speed the other day and got 1.3mb wired through mains. Again last night we lost connection a few times, the green light turning orange for periods.
In my office which is near the house I just measured 5.6mb with BT.
I suppose I should have tried changing the channels to see but the PCs are now through the mains. Might try it later with the laptop and see what happens.
But even wired it is not fast and cuts out in the evenings. So will call Sky to see what they do.
The BT I had was on a separate line in as it was booked for my work. Now the BB is through the normal home phone line. I wonder if the line, or the wiring in the house is old and not up to it although all BB companies I contacted said they tested it and could offer up to Xmb...
For info, I got the SKY 1TB box and set it up the other day and it works very well. No componant connection anymore.

From this, I get the impression that the router may be on the end of a length of home wiring. I'm no expert on ADSL, but I understand that it's recommended to plug the router in to the master socket.

You say you got the highest package available to you. Which means its possibly still Sky connect and if it is it will never sort itself out.
You can get the speed you were promised during the day and stupid hours of the morning but as soon as it hits 5pm its game over

Re: Sky Broadband
One word of warning, Sky tv engineers who connect the tv box to the line do not carry filters, check that everything is going onto the telephone line through a filter and also make sure that the router is directly onto a filter on your main socket and not an extension.
To be able to help we would need the stats from the router to see what your current status is.
http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/view-routerstats.html is a good read.

Something that looks like this is coming out of your master socket?

Re: Sky Broadband
The router and tv go into the filter. The phone line is without. I think I have a spare filter here somewhere.
The incoming phone line finishes by the front door. It is taken from there by a wire to the main socket. This wiring was done at least 12 years ago (I suspect much much longer than that) so I wonder if this is not up to carrying high speeds.
The nightly cut-outs though will not have anything to do with this and I'll check package name and contact Sky.

Re: Sky Broadband
erm, in my opinion, NO.
I'm with sky, and I actually do like them, but this 'up to 20mb' is rubbish. It depends on the area you're in, I've got unlimited, and I've only actually got 3.4mb
You can check which is better for your area, I found talktalk is better for me. I can't remmeber the website I used to check it though.

Re: Sky Broadband
You are on connect so yes it is a coincidence as BT control your speed not sky. Like I said, if on Connect leave as soon as possible.

I have a print out Paul of my online livechat with a BT rep that says that BT do not throttle the speeds and it is Sky that are doing it.
BT say i will get 7.0 or so mbps all the time. ( fup) applies of course.

Re: Sky Broadband
BT systems control your line speed as Sky Connect is a just rebadge of BT Connect. You are on BT exchange equipment running BT tools, Sky have no actual hands on control of your line setup but they are causing the throttling in a different way....
Sky only bought enough bandwidth for a set amount of users on Sky Connect so the service is badly oversubscribed which is why the speed dies at set times of the day.
Like I said it's coincidence that your speed dropped when it did as Sky cannot tell BT to drop your speed, (they can ask for your line to be re-profiled but that's not the same and takes a while to actually happen) you hit a heavy usage period and the speed dropped due to the subscription issue.
The BT guy is correct in saying BT do not throttle but didn't explain why or how Sky is causing the throttle effect to occur and it's just down to over-subscription and not enough bandwidth being paid for. They are buying more bandwidth soon but I would still not agree to take Sky connect no matter what sky offered with it.
Speed negotiation on Connect (Sky or BT) is automatic but with BT Connect you won't get the contention and over subscription that you get with Sky Connect and so should see your speed achieve the maximum the line can take.
Do you know what your current stats are as often BT underestimate what speed a line can achieve?

Re: Sky Broadband
BT still has not activated my line, they said by 10th August it should be complete, but i ordered on 23rd July, so thats like 1 month. why does it take so long?
i guess if Sky is crap, i'll be stuck in a contract with BT if i want to go back to Virgin.
