Modem Hacking
Is it possible for someone to be able to hack into your modem even if it's encrypted

you modem is not what they hack that just receives your internet connection and connects to your pc
it,s the pc they hack if you have a firewall it make it harder for them to do.
if you are using a wireless router it may have a firewall built in as well.
wireless router should have a encrypted key to access it.
without the pass key nobody can get access.
but a good hacker will get into anything

Re: Modem Hacking
I take it you mean router and not modem.. The modem side is not encrypted at all, but the router side is encrypted and has the firewall. (even if they are one unit they are still basically two systems)

Re: Modem Hacking
Just check you're using WPA on the router (in the router's control panel) and that you have a good strong 'key' (mix upper and lower case letter, sling in some numbers, then make it as long as you can).

Re: Modem Hacking
I know this sounds dim but what it the difference between a router and a modem I have a box with two arials coming out of it and underneath it has long no's and letters and that is what I had to put in to connect to my internet. If any of the family came to my house with there laptops then they would have to do the same thing

The one with the antennas is the router and yes they would have to put in the password to gain access to the internet, which is what your neighbour wants.

Re: Modem Hacking
So she cant bypass that so unless she has that. Because the other night she was quiet upfront telling me that she was trying to get into it and she asked me had I a password. I just told her that the service provider had it. She said oh right thats why I cant log into your network so. Im still gobsmacked that she was so upfront about it

Can you change the wpa letters that the service provider gave me on the box or is it safe enough the way it is

If you post the Router make and model here somebody will be able to explain how to put in your own password which can be up to 63 characters in length.

If it has a brand name or model number include that as well.

Re: Modem Hacking
One quick question... Do you use the Wifi side of it? If not and you are totally on a wired network then just turn off the Wifi function... Then bet her £100 that she can't break into the network!!!

Re: Modem Hacking
I think things have been over complicated here a little
If you only have one box and your broadband comes down a phone line then you have a modem and router in one box
If your service provider has automatically set the router up so its just plug and play and they have given you a passcode/key for it and this is deffinately WPA of some type and its deffinately enabled then you should be safe
Do you connect to it wirelessly yourself? if so we can check from your pc if its secured correctly
