Just because the exchange was a 10 minute walk does not mean the line had the same route. My exchange is 261 metres away but my line length is actually 751 metres.

16mb is still possible at 2500 metres line length.

bear in mind that would be in perfect conditions.

you did point out the reality tho, walking distance will be typically less than line distance, hence the very small radius around each exchange.

To see what I mean load up something like google maps and pinpoint an exchange and look at the surrounding area its likely to cover. then do a 1.5km radius (assuming this will equate to around 2km line length) and it will be very small compared to the total coverage of the exchange. 1.5 I feel I am been extremely generous and a better test is a 1km radius.

Although to be fair it does seem some areas have a higher density of exchanges than others, eg. here there is 2 exchanges covering a 8km radius. In other areas there is over 4 covering the same area. Most towns seem to have one exchange each and villages tend to share exchanges.

Re: BeThere I am very disappointed

We get 16Mb on a bodged line install that the previous home owners left us with. If I could be bothered I would sort it out myself but after fitting a prefilter socket where the master was we have stabilised the line to 16Mb without much fuss or effort. If I fixed it then we would get more as we have a good attenuation.

and so u should send it back you are renting a service and the modem/router is part of that service ntl/virgin were just to idol to collect them it was not cost effective for them
in this fast moving tec world we now live in they will more than likely be junked anyway send it back with no postage afixed if you feel that strong

Love me broadband but would not get so drastic over a few meg as to move house!
