advice?

Had to move from VM to BT cos our house is not in a VM area...

So, got a BT Home Hub (The black one, home hub 2) and every day without fail we have to reboot it 1-2 times because the connection drops (Wireless to 2 netbooks running windows 7).

We have tried the following:

- calling bt for help (useless)
- changing wifi channel (auto to 9, 11 - no joy)
- moving away from tv/cordless phone (no change)
- hard reset

Today it started randomly shutting off and rebooting itself, has done so 4 times since 7.30 this morning. The broadband light goes from solid blue to orange, to red, to off, to flickering blue and back to solid blue. can't use the internet at all during this time (2-3 mins each time).

I think its a problem with the hub itself and as far as I know its just a router similar to netgear etc. When i was with VM i had a netgear router attached to the modem.

Am I right in thinking I could swap the hub for the netgear router (a bloody good one at that) and maybe things will run smoothly, or am I being naive about the hub being just a router?

If that wouldn't work, would anyone know of another solution? Other options I was thinking about was phoning BT for a new hub, telling them to naff off and taking out bb with someone else (o2, talk talk etc) or a hammer to the hub

Thanks!

Re: advice?

you will need an ADSL Modem / Router, but you will notice improvements over the homehub anyway

Are my problems with the hub specific to it or if I get another one from BT am I likely to keep having the same problems?

Is there anything I can do (settings etc) to make the hub work and not keep dropping connection?

Re: advice?

I'm not sure if I have or not. How would I check this?

Also, the output is set to b/g/n which I noticed last night. Is this a factor?

Re: advice?

Power save won't cause the hub to reboot, will just turn off things like wireless. B/G/N are just standards of wireless transmission used by the router, again, nothing to do with the issue. Heat can cause random reboot, faulty PSUs can too but if the power light is not going out then this may just be your router losing it sync and resetting itself on the line and you will not get access to the internet till it finishes.
Best thing to do is post your stats from the router (attenuation, noise margin and speed on upload and download) and also say where the router is plugged into your tel line and what else is on there.
I've had issues like this from people only to find out they have just got something new and plugged it into the tel line without a filter.
