BT Fibre To Cabinet Phases 4b / 5 Announced

Here's the (large) list of exchanges scheduled to get BT's up to 40Mbit downstream 10Mbit upstream Fibre to the Cabinet technology from middle of this year to next year. This list is subject to change.

These phases, 4b and 5, will take the coverage up to 6.3 million homes.

You can check which exchange you are on here.

As a reminder before comments about BT Infinity start flying in that is tenuously on-topic at best as BT Retail are just one provider of services over this network. Sky, O2 / Be, Talk Talk, Andrews and Arnold and others also supply or plan to supply services via the Fibre to the Cabinet network.

Re: BT Fibre To Cabinet Phases 4b / 5 Announced

Blimey we are an enthusiastic bunch. Another over 5.5 million homes having 40Mbit downstream and more interestingly 10Mbit upstream rolled out to them and not even an 'oooh' from the many of you that will be scheduled?

Maybe we are so enthusiastic bacause as a cable based forum most of us already have access to faster speeds than BT would offer even with their roll out

Well, I guess if all people do is leech off newsgroups they might notice the difference between 40M down and 50M down, personally I'd notice the difference between 10M up and 1.75M up quite a bit more but that's just me.

I am starting to realise just how odd I am getting rid of 50Mbit in a couple of months because I've no need for the downstream speed and the upstream continues to suck with no end in sight

At least Openreach's CEO agrees with me

If you look at the whole development of the internet, I think the thing that makes it unique is the ability to share in two directions. It puts power in the hands of the users, allows them to share stuff with multiple audiences, it allows them to share stuff with people that are hundreds of miles away, and play games with people who are thousands of miles away.

The minute we open the tap and say you can have 10Mbits/sec up as well as 40Mbits/sec down, I think people will start to use that. The only reason there’s not a big focus on it just now is because people haven’t been able to utilise those sort of up speeds until now. I think when they’re available, a lot of cool stuff is going to happen.

Re: BT Fibre To Cabinet Phases 4b / 5 Announced

For my office the ability to have a much faster upload would be great. If the 10M up is actually achieved for many businesses that are regularly issuing email and the like then this would be a welcome improvement. For most residential users though we are more interested in download (unless you really are still into p2p leeching). Even for gamers the upload from VM speeds suffices, even though more would be nice, it's not yet essential. I wonder how many users on VM 50 meg download really need it. It would be a nice toy, but not essential. But of course BT need to get their infrastructure to play catch up.

Same, I looked at this list with my bosses at work and scoured it for both Norwich and Lowestoft. Not on there.

Me too when Warrington is given the green light, I would move in a heartbeat for that upload and a hopefully more stable connection to boot.

Come on BT pull your finger out

My daughter would go "oooh" if "Wooly" exchange was ever on the list. Nothing but BT 512k hell available there.
