75 Upstream On Live Cable Network, 100 In Lab

Yep.

It should be noted that VM have not yet tested to this extent on live networks. In the areas that are getting 10Mbps trials they are running a single 20Mbps upstream in addition to the standard 4 10Mbps ones, in Ashford they had 4 15Mbps upstreams bonded. Comcast are running on 2 x 30Mbps channels and 2 x 15Mbps channels in the live network tests and 4 x 30Mbps in the lab.

This is purely to point out that the technology is now available and is expected to go live by end of year. Your favourite cable company and mine have work to do before they can even contemplate doing this to any scale on live networks.

Interesting Doubt VM will follow too quickly though...

No doubt the business side will follow even slower if at all...

ohh but you didnt allow for neil's tryed and (not)trusted Virgin Media world class PR innovations releases for news outlets and page fillers.

Fiber Price War Comes Home in UK

Virgin Media, the UK’s first quad-play provider of broadband, TV, phone and mobile, today announced it would begin the roll-out of a 100Mb broadband service, the fastest available commercial product in the UK, by the end of 2010. All of Virgin’s existing 3.8 million cable broadband customers would be able to achieve 100 Mbps speed by 2011, should they choose to subscribe to the faster service, said a spokesman.

" 25/02/10Virgin Media to Launch Flagship 100Mb BroadbandUK's fastest broadband more than 24 times the average speedExpansion of 200Mb customer trialLONDON, Feb 25, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

Virgin Media's chief executive officer, Neil Berkett, said: "There is nothing we can't do with our fibre optic cable network, and the upcoming launch of our flagship 100Mb service will give our customers the ultimate broadband experience.

Just as we led the way by launching the UK's first ever next generation service, we want to keep giving our customers the very best broadband available, by investing in technological innovation and transforming the experience they have when they are online.

The launch of Virgin Media's 100Mb service will be a historic moment and will mean the UK will be comparable to other leading broadband nations."

The 100Mb service will allow users to download a music album in as little as 5 seconds, an hour long TV show in 31 seconds and an HD movie in 7 minutes 25 seconds.

This is significantly faster than the time it would take a person using the fastest speeds on offer from competitors*** where a music album could be downloaded on average in 1 minute 15 seconds, an hour long TV show in 7 minutes 18 seconds and an HD movie in 1 hour 44 minutes.

In another major development for the broadband sector, Virgin Media will extend its 200Mb pilot to Coventry where it will look to recruit hundreds of customers to test the internet with this supercharged speed.

"

so Neil still officially states he wants YOU to download these TV show in 31 seconds and an HD movie in 7 minutes 25 seconds. on the fastest virgin media broadband package coming you by Q1 2011.

it always interesting how the VM PR innovation department Never seems to mention the actual upload rates or ratio's that go with these increased download rollouts though , and NO news outlet personel seems clever enough to actually ask and get an official VM PR statement as to these actual upload rates/ratio's

Re: 75 Upstream On Live Cable Network, 100 In Lab

True.

The most likely course of events will probably be Virgin kidnapping another channel from the legacy network and bonding that with the existing one having pumped them both up to 64QAM. Will give each node 30Mbps of upstream capacity, enough for the 5Mbps mooted for the 50Mbps service and for the very occasional 10Mbps upstream mooted for the 100Mbps service.

As I mentioned Virgin have gone as high as 200/50 using the 4 bonded downstreams and 4 bonded 3.2MHz wide upstreams.

Developments with SCDMA look promising and the Virgin BSRs are running a code which I believe allows the use of the RX-48 48 upstream module.

EDIT: Just as a note the S-CDMA picture does feature 3 x 6.4MHz wide upstreams and 2 x 3.2MHz wide upstreams on the pre-upgrade side, a common configuration on the VM network is 4 x 3.2MHz wide upstreams only with 6.4MHz under trial.

The VM PR also don't mention they'll probably STM you after downloading that HD movie, so it'll now take 7 hours, 25 minutes to download another of the same size! :P

*sigh*

This "witty" STM argument is tired. I see it here, on DS, El Reg, The Inq etc. Every time VM announce a new upgrade, the STM quip is sure to appear.

Even worse when it is made by someone who isn't even affected by it in the first place.
