Is Google going to fibre Britain?

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/broadban...-fibre-britain

With access to BT's underground ducts, will BGoogle fibre Britain? Thus allowing other ISP to offer alot faster internet access even rivaling Virginmedia's speed

Re: Is Google going to fibre Britain?

According to the official Google blog this is happening in America but the target community hasn't been identified yet.

Re: Is Google going to fibre Britain?

The answer is probably no!

American firms pulled out of Britain years ago when they realised,in Britain people do not look beyond the word free and expect free broadband, there isn't much money to be made from it, for businesses yes but the residential market is profitless, far to much competition and too many low spending consumers.

So of the companies which pulled out of the UK telecoms industry:

Nynex/Bell Atlantic (now Verizon) offers only Business services in the UK
Videotron
Comcast
SBC communications
United Artists/Qwest
Thus
Deutsche Telekom (Eurobell operations)
Cable and Wireless
IPM Communications
Npower
Tiscali
Tele2

There is a lot of competition with the mobile phone companies now as well, mobile broadband is getting cheaper and cheaper yet speeds and reliability are also improving fast.

Therefore if I was Google, I wouldn't dream of entering the UK residential market.

It's far from impossible and the service would absolutely annihilate Virgin's speeds

There's a lot more thought required though and PC Pro are just speculating.

Re: Is Google going to fibre Britain?

And how much are Google willing to splash out in the UK, all these private firms do is offer patchy coverage! Cable TV available on one side of the street, No ADSL on the other,Analogue only cable on the other side of town, its just annoying that all these companies still don't offer at least 90% coverage of there services to say they have been around since 1984-deregulation.

Re: Is Google going to fibre Britain?

Oh it's not happening then, if they were serious about it,they wouldn't have already chosen.

Like I said Google has to much to compete with in Britain and North America. Think it should just stick to being a search engine, look at Gmail and Googletalk messenger compare that to MSN and Yahoo, it hasn't really caught on has it.

I wouldn't dream of using Google anyway for internet, Its another phorm, collecting, selling and saving all your internet history. Nah don't fancy that.

Re: Is Google going to fibre Britain?

slow, re your link - keep in mind that Google keep at least three, up to five, copies of all data at any one time, so it is moving huuuuuuuge chunks of data around all the time; hence the need for it's own fibre network, rather than giving all the money to Ma Bell's kids.

I think it's the dark fibre that they have been sitting on which they are going to use for broadband in the US.
