New Sky Broadband Customer need Help PLEASE
Hi
I really need some help as sky cant.
I have just moved to sky broadband from madasafish with whom i had no problems. I only moved because skys unlimited downloads was much cheaper than madasafish.
My internet connection came live today and i was able to go online wirelessly with the sagem router sky gave me for an hour. I then shutdown my pc to do other things, came back to it a few hours later & my wireless connection just kept dropping. I have spent over 2 hours on phone to sky who tell me that my wireless adapter which is a BT voyager 1055 is not compatible with their sagem router, but if this was the case surely it would not have worked for an hour earlier today. I asked sky should I go back to my old netgear router, which worked fine with the wireless adapter, & they told me it would not work with their service as the sagem contained information needed to get my sky broadband to work.
Can anyone help as im ready to tear my hair out at this stage, even my son cant get online on ps3 as it keeps telling me i have entered the wrong network key when i reconfigured his wireless connection to sky.
If you cant help is it too late for me to back out of sky & go back to madasafish.

Have they taken you through the channel change on the router for the wireless? If not try that first as the sagem goes out on "Auto" which is rubbish for most people. You can use your own router but have to get your user details out of the sky router first.

Re: New Sky Broadband Customer need Help PLEASE
Hi Thanks for getting back to me. Yes they did change the channel settings on the router but it didnt make any difference. I just read on sky user website that i have 8 days from going live to end my contract, So im gonna try that & go back to madasafish. Thanks again I will let you know how I get on.
PS My speed was originally 5.6mb & now its gone down to 3.6. So theres another problem. I hope they will let me go.

If you had a fixed rate connection (i.e. synced to the exchange at 2Mbit for example) and moved to Sky's unlimited broadband, it will take 10 days to settle the profile down to something reliable and drops in speed can be expected.

Re: New Sky Broadband Customer need Help PLEASE
Thanks Turkey Machine. Ive just spoken to sky & they gave me my mac code, but left my internet live until i use the mac code. So i will wait & see does the speed pick up any but the real problem was the fact that i couldnt go wireless with their router & they said they cant configure the old router i have that worked fine.

I agree with this above to try, when Virgin give me the new DLink it was set to auto and everytime a certain wireless network came live elsewhere my connection either went sluggish or dropped. I did a test to see what networks in the area are using what channels during the evening and they were mostly on Channels 1, 6 and 11. I set mine to connect on Channel 9 and its been ok since touch wood.

Re: New Sky Broadband Customer need Help PLEASE
What channels were tried? Some of the Tier 1 agents stick to the rules and do not use 13 which happens to be one of the better ones to look at. Aside from that you can certainly use your old router by getting the details out of the sky router and using them with the router you know already works. You might want to give that a go while you are in the cooling off period because it will save migrating back. If it fails you can go back to madasafish using the MAC code you already have.

Re: New Sky Broadband Customer need Help PLEASE
You might want to have a play with a piece of software called netstumbler, if nothing else it will tell you what is around you and what channels to try and avoid so you get the best from your wireless with whichever router you use.

Re: New Sky Broadband Customer need Help PLEASE
Install it and run it, it should tell you what wireless networks are nearby and what channel number they are using. Once you know that you can adjust your wireless router channel to one that is not heavily in use around you.
