roaming

I went to Spain last week and rang Orange from abroad to set up the phone for roaming because it was not set up for this. They said it should have been done 24 hours before but no problem i would recieve a text saying activated in half an hour.
Through the week we rang them loads of times and my online account said roaming activated but it never was .We never got the roaming signal and if we tried to connect manually it said not registered.
I swoped the sim card with my song pay as you go card ang that worked but not mine.
As soon as we landed in Britain the text came through saying activated to use the phone abroad
Does anyone know if the phone had to be activated before we went, because when we rang Orange from Spain they said they would do it fine.Problem is, will it work next time i go to Spain. Can they just activate it their end or does the phone need a network to update it to roam
Hope someone knows, before i ring Orange and play hell

Re: roaming

What happens with the handset and sim is that when a new account is set up there are bars on the account eg roaming bars . These are removed after a period of time but if you phone up from abroad to get the handset activated for roaming it does not always work as normally when bars are removed you need to be in the uk and that is why you recieved the text when you got back home .

Hope that clarifies things for you ?

Re: roaming

I Phoned o2 about a week before going abroad and they said roaming was activated.

Sure enough I got there and the phone roamed onto the local networks there, got a message advising me of the charges as soon as the phone first connected to one of the networks in the other country.

Only problem I had is when I landed back in the UK I had to turn my phone off and back on before it would find the o2 network again, when I took the phone off flight mode it got stuck on searching for some reason

I always do. Also, as a word of advice, if you are planning to use any credit/debit cards, let the issuing bank know where you are going. A lot of bans operate anti-fraud security systems that keep a track of roughly where you use the card normally and block any transactions that occur too far outside that area.
