Sent an email to my parish councillor, with a link to that article. I mentioned it in the past, but all I got back was that the parish councillors are happy with the service they currently receive, and would find the cost prohibitively expensive to do. Yet if I ask other normal villagers, they state they are not happy, even if they can get broadband, and would be happy to pay for a decent service! Funny that the parish councillors all live on much shorter phonelines so get a better service, next to the exchange or street cabinet! Yet again, those in power making decisions for us normal working people by themselves, without consulting with us first! Just like central government! They are supposed to represent what we want, not rule us and tell us what to do!

Re: BT begins FTTC broadband rollout pilots

Well, Rutland Telecom now exists as an independent telco business. And the thing about an independent business is, you don't need support, permission or leadership from your community council to set one up.

In my experience, community councils are inhabited by hacks and busybodies who like having the title and recognition but aren't vastly interested in actually doing anything they didn't think up themselves (and that isn't very much). If yours is being obstructive, or just plain disinterested, then don't involve them. You don't have to. Get a group of like-minded, interested private citizens together, get in touch with someone from Rutland Telecom, have a chat, then go for it yourselves.

Re: BT begins FTTC broadband rollout pilots

For the curious, BT are going to be delivering 15Mbps upstreams later this year on their FTTC network.

Unsure if they'll be doing their upgrade to 60Mbps downstream - will make enquiries.

Re: BT begins FTTC broadband rollout pilots

Today I saw Openreach install FTTC round the corner from me (RG41 5). The guy said BT will be marketing it in about a month.

For all the hopefuls in RG41, the engineer said it was only in certain places. So I'll look round and see what other street cabs have been added.

So maybe I'll be an early adopter. I don't plan on dumping VM just yet and O2 has been curiously silent on their LLU adoption in Wokingham of FTTC.

Well after Gordon Brown, that's something else to look forward to.

Re: BT begins FTTC broadband rollout pilots

Chris, I suspect rutland's success wont be mirrored much, it requires a few things.

1 - A community feeling in the area, tends to be stronger in villages and small towns but weak in urban areas. I would be very surprised if we ever see a urban or suburban area do a rutland telecom style rollout.
2 - I suspect people who know they may well move within the next 3 years or so will be hesitant to invest in something they wont benefit from in the long term.

Even myself a internet addict if had the opportunity here I would think long about it as I could well be moved before the work ever got completed and would be investing to help my ex neighbours. However if a shareholding in the company was rewarded it would change things.

That's nice to know, don't like to just have Hobson's Choice available.

Re: BT begins FTTC broadband rollout pilots

I'm a bit confused about where I stand with regard to FTTC. My exchange is due to go live on 1st Sept (SamKnows) and the BTw checker said I was good to go with an attainable download rate of 24Mbps.

But in the last week or so, when I've checked the BTw checker, all mention of my line (well postcode, due to a cockup with the phone no. BT are currently sorting out) supporting a fibre service has disappeared.

I was just wondering if anyone 'in the know' could shed some light on this?

Re: BT begins FTTC broadband rollout pilots

Without the number they probably can't check the database correctly, once the number issue is resolved you may well find it re-appears on the checker once the database has updated fully.

Re: BT begins FTTC broadband rollout pilots

I just got BT infinity today and I must say it is excellent. Very fast speed brilliant hub and modem. Outlook email simple to set and and desktop icons linking you to all the information you need.

Also free BT broadband talk. I am very pleased, I live in a new house with the Grey socket outside, no master on the inside but the engineer put a new socket in the master bedroom right near the computer.

Excellent service so far, couldn't be happier.
