 LOL.
the thing i find very strange, BT didnt see fit to put wythenshawe/manchester internation airport (10 miles south of manchester city center) on the list though.
wythenshaws (including VMs baguley building etc) got to be perhaps Virgin Media's largest single deployment of residential cable, being still one of the largest garden citys of the EU.
and Manchester airport's 3rd party companies and hotels, offices etc not to mention the massive wythenshaw hospital and their need for many high speed medical and other data tranfers have got to be werth a good few long term FTTC/P... and fibre backhaul lines.
so why didnt BT see fit to put that on their Phase 1 never mind Phase 2 lists... dont they want to take on VM! there, or did they just mess up the chance, very odd.
hell, you could probably make a very good case today for sighting a few new large Co-Location sites there and run new fibre from them all over the country to encurage new IT Co-location and backhaul growth in the NW etc...

Re: BT begins FTTC broadband rollout pilots
Very early days yet. Many areas that aren't in phase 1 or 2 that you would have thought would have been no-brainer areas.
I would imagine all major urban areas will be covered by FTTC or even FTTP though in time.
The Wythenshawe exchange itself is actually not exceptionally large, and is low business density!
SamKnows Broadband - Availability - Wythenshawe (MRWYT) Exchange
There's no way the hospital would use the consumer-grade FTTC/P services they'll have leased connectivity to NHSNet.
These businesses are hardly going to be running on cable modems, so it's probably a fair bet that the business situation wasn't a major consideration. Small branch offices, SMEs, etc, will be the target of the NGA products. Larger companies may get a line in for backup but will still have the SLA'd leased circuits.

40Mbit is good to 750m or so on that guage of copper. Theoretical performance is 50Mbit at 1km depending on line quality.

Unsure what the kit in the cabinets is apart from that it has 10GbE interfaces and does VDSL2. They're using Huawei for the fibre to home stuff so wouldn't surprise if they were using Huawei for the cabinet MSANs as well.

I know! It's almost as if only 1/20th of the population of the UK live there and the two most populous cities have populations of less than 350,000 and less than 240,000 respectively giving it the most expensive population in the UK to cover along with the lowest economic output per head in the Union and a lower take up of more expensive broadband services.
It's nothing personal, just business. My own extremely affluent and densely populated area of London isn't there either. In fact my entire Borough isn't there despite having the highest self-employment rate in the UK, lowest benefit claimant count, and a gross value add / economic output per head nearly double that of Wales.
I am not sure exactly what the criteria are, however I do know that service providers have a lot of input and evidently not that many are particularly interested in Wales as evidenced by the low LLU rate there. If there were money to be made the ISPs would be all over BT to build the network to help them make it.

Reading your ISP though you should note that Sky have as yet shown no interest at all in delivering services over this network, in common with a lot of other LLU operators who appear to be sulking over this possibly making their LLU investment in MSANs redundant.
